Meet Evan McGill and His Vision for the TV Show ‘Broadway Bound: The Search for Broadway’s Next Star’
EXCLUSIVE: A new competition is set to take center stage: Broadway Bound: The Search For Broadway’s Next Star.
The show, created by Evan McGill, will feature musical theater performers vying for a lead role in a fully produced musical, aiming to kick-start their careers.
McGill is collaborating with Diamond Moving Pictures—co-founded by Bill Diamond, Sheri Rosenberg Kelton, and Randy Mendelsohn—to develop the international format. The show will initially launch in the U.S., UK, Philippines, and Korea.
McGill’s impressive portfolio includes producing the Tony-winning productions of Sunset Blvd., Evita, and the current Broadway show Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York), which is playing at the Longacre Theatre. He has also worked on Broadway cast albums, including The Music Man: The 2022 Broadway Cast Recording, and is a general partner in Tanninger Fund II, an investment vehicle supporting theatrical projects globally.
“Sheri and I met about five years ago, and a few years into our relationship we aligned on taking this idea global, recognizing that theater connects with audiences everywhere,” McGill said. “When Diamond Moving Pictures was formed, this project became a natural fit for their broader vision, giving us the right platform and partners to begin bringing it to life.”
Contestants will face a “Broadway-caliber” competition featuring elite-level singing, dancing, and acting to secure a lead role within their local territory. Weekly challenges will assess versatility, endurance, and performance skills through complex choreography, iconic musical numbers, and dramatic pieces.
A panel of industry judges, alongside a rotating ensemble of directors, choreographers, and professional performers, will evaluate the participants, eliminating one contestant each week.
Diamond Moving Pictures has crafted Broadway Bound with a territory licensing model aimed at facilitating the career launches of artists across various regions.
“This format is exactly the kind of model we’re excited to build around — it’s scalable and brand-forward. More importantly, it reflects our vision of generating IP that genuinely resonates with culture and audiences,” said a spokesperson for Diamond Moving Pictures. “We aim to engage younger, digitally native viewers in interactive and communal ways, creating ideas that not only launch but continue to grow and spark fandom over time.”
“Broadway Bound is about finding those performers and giving them the opportunity they deserve,” McGill added. “For many of them, this may be the first time someone from the world of professional theater is truly watching. The idea that the next great triple threat could come from anywhere is incredibly powerful.”
Rosenberg Kelton, CEO of Diamond Moving Pictures, stated, “One of the most exciting aspects of the format is its ability to expand the global audience for theater. By bringing the process of creating musical theater into homes around the world, Broadway Bound opens doors for audiences to experience an art form they may never have had access to before.”
She emphasized that the formation of Diamond Moving Pictures was predicated on the principle of quality-driven, IP-focused business practices, highlighting a slate of original series and premium features developed to be production-ready and financially viable. “When Evan came to us with his brilliant concept, it immediately felt like a natural extension of our model—something repeatable and scalable.”
Rosenberg Kelton noted, “There’s a real appetite right now for formats that are culturally relevant and come with a clear framework for growth. Buyers are looking for projects that can engage audiences and expand across platforms, and this fits that demand.”
As with any new format, the success of Broadway Bound will ultimately depend on its reception in the market, as creators aim to transform their vision into a hit show.
