Maya Erskine Joins Donald Glover as Executive Producer for Season 2 of ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ with New Cast Members Talia Ryder and Mark Eydelshteyn Starting Production in LA
Production Begins on Season 2 of Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Los Angeles County is now the site of production for Season 2 of Prime Video’s acclaimed spy drama, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, from Amazon MGM Studios and New Regency.
Returning for the new season are stars Maya Erskine and Donald Glover, who are expected to reprise their roles as John Smith and Jane Smith. Erskine also steps into the role of executive producer alongside Glover, although the specifics of their return remain unspecified.
In a notable development for Season 2, a younger couple portraying John and Jane is set to be introduced. Mark Eydelshteyn, known for his work in Anora, has been cast as the new John, while Talia Ryder, celebrated for her performance in Never Rarely Sometimes Always, joins him as Jane, marking her debut in a television series. Ryder takes over the role from Sophie Thatcher, who was initially in negotiations before her commitments to the final season of Yellowjackets conflicted with the rescheduled production timeline.
The storyline for the upcoming season is being closely guarded, with auditions conducted for various roles, primarily in pairs. Season 1 featured multiple iterations of the characters, which suggests a continuation of this trend.
Created by Glover and Francesca Sloane, Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a reimagining of the 2005 film of the same name. Following a delay in Season 2’s production, Sloane departed as showrunner last September to join HBO. In January, Anna Ouyang Moench, previously associated with Beef, took over as showrunner, writer, and executive producer alongside Glover. Returning executive producers include Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Stephen Glover, Anthony Katagas, and Fam Udeorji.
The series previously received recognition for relocating from New York to Los Angeles County with a $22.4 million tax credit awarded by the California Film Commission. This incentive remains valid for the current season.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith debuted in 2024 and follows two solitary strangers, played by Glover and Erskine, who take on roles at a covert spy agency that offers espionage, luxury, and adventure—all under the cover of a supposedly arranged marriage. As they undertake high-stakes missions, the complexity of their relationship escalates, blurring the lines between espionage and romance.
The first season garnered significant acclaim, securing 16 Emmy nominations and winning two, including a nod for Erskine as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She recently contributed her voice to the Emmy-nominated animated series Blue Eye Samurai and previously starred in the Emmy-nominated PEN15, for which she also served as a co-creator.
