Maurice DuBois is Leaving His Role as Co-Anchor of CBS Evening News This Month
Maurice DuBois announced on Thursday that he will step down as co-anchor of CBS Evening News on December 18. This decision comes amid leadership changes within the news division and the acquisition of parent company Paramount by Skydance.
In an emotional post on Instagram, DuBois shared, “It has been the Honor of a Lifetime. 21 years altogether, including my time at WCBS-TV in New York City. What a privilege! To be welcomed into your homes night after night, delivering the news and meeting extraordinary people and telling their stories. I’ll leave filled with gratitude, cherished relationships, and amazing memories. A couple weeks to go; until then, see you on The CBS Evening News every night at 6:30.”
His co-anchor, John Dickerson, has also announced plans to leave CBS News at the end of the year.
The CBS Evening News is expected to undergo significant changes under the direction of Bari Weiss, the new editor in chief of the news division. Tom Cibrowski, president and executive editor of CBS News, stated that further details about the future of the broadcast will be released “in the near future.”
“Maurice has long represented what we do best at CBS News and Stations,” Cibrowski remarked. “For more than two decades, he has delivered the day’s biggest stories from our studios in New York and in the field. Later this month, Maurice will leave the network. We are grateful for his significant contributions at both CBS News New York and the CBS Evening News. Maurice is deeply valued and respected as a journalist by all of us, and we wish him much success. It is my hope that we can work together again.”
DuBois and Dickerson had taken on their roles less than a year ago, following the departure of Norah O’Donnell. Since then, they have implemented a format change focusing on correspondent storytelling. However, the broadcast continues to trail behind competitors, with minimal signs of audience growth. Adjustments have been made, emphasizing breaking news headlines to compete with ABC’s World News Tonight and NBC’s Nightly News.
Before joining CBS News, DuBois anchored at WCBS-TV in New York, where he began his tenure in 2004.
