Matthew Stafford: Why Pro Bowl Selections Don’t Worry Him
Matthew Stafford Reflects on Pro Bowl Recognition After Stellar Season
Quarterback Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams has been named to the Pro Bowl this season, an accolade he has not prioritized in over a decade. Stafford, who previously had standout seasons, recalls feeling hopeful about earning a spot in the Pro Bowl during his third year in the league, when he threw for over 5,000 yards and 41 touchdowns with the Detroit Lions. "Wasn’t even close," he said with a chuckle, referencing the higher vote counts for Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, and Cam Newton. "So at that point, I kind of reserved myself to just go play, have fun, and whatever happens, happens. But it is cool to be a part of it."
This season, at 37 years old, Stafford has emerged as a frontrunner for the NFL’s most valuable player award. He leads the league with 4,179 passing yards and 40 touchdowns while maintaining a low interception count of five. Under his guidance, the Rams hold an impressive 11-4 record and are currently seeded sixth in the NFC as they prepare for a crucial matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.
The Rams have consistently put up strong offensive numbers, averaging 30.5 points and 396.7 yards per game, both of which lead the NFL. The team ranks second in passing yards per game and fifth in rushing, creating a balanced and potent offense.
In their recent 38-37 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Stafford threw for 457 yards and three touchdowns but was outshined by fellow Pro Bowl pick Sam Darnold, who led his team to victory with a game-winning two-point conversion.
Looking ahead, Stafford is set to face a Falcons defense that ranks 14th overall and eighth against the pass, allowing just 195.1 yards per game. Rams coach Sean McVay expressed surprise at Stafford’s limited Pro Bowl appearances, noting, "There are a lot of layers to the Pro Bowl stuff." He acknowledged Stafford’s status as one of the best quarterbacks in history, saying, "I think it’s probably overdue."
McVay emphasized Stafford’s positive influence on the team since his arrival in 2021. "The best part about Matthew is, he’s got this great humility," McVay remarked. He added that Stafford values the respect of his teammates and coaches and is well-regarded for his competitive spirit.
In other news for the Rams, receiver Davante Adams and offensive lineman Kevin Dotson are making progress with their injuries, although no specific updates were provided regarding their status for the upcoming game. The team has also activated the 21-day window for cornerback Roger McCreary’s return from injured reserve and is expected to do the same for safety Quentin Lake next week.
With their sights set on the playoffs, the Rams practice schedule includes a break on Thursday and sessions at SoFi Stadium and their Woodland Hills facility later in the week.
