During a recent appearance on the January 7 episode of Where Everybody Knows Your Name, hosted by Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey shared insights about his iconic character David Wooderson from the 1993 film Dazed and Confused. This role marked his film debut, secured while he was a student at the University of Texas in Austin.
McConaughey, now 56, recounted a pivotal moment leading to his casting. One evening, while at a rooftop bar where a film school classmate worked, he learned that casting director Don Phillips was in attendance. After initiating a lengthy conversation that lasted over three hours, Phillips showed enthusiasm for potential collaboration.
“Three and a half hours later, we get kicked out,” McConaughey recalled, noting that their discussion veered into golf, prompting Phillips to demonstrate his swing atop a table.

As they shared a cab on the way home, Phillips asked McConaughey about his acting experience. McConaughey responded, “Yeah, I was in a Miller Light commercial. I don’t know if you consider that acting. Maybe it was more of a modeling job.” Intrigued by his casual charm, Phillips felt McConaughey might be suitable for the role of Wooderson, a character described as “out of high school, but still likes high school girls.”
The next morning, McConaughey received an invitation to audition along with a handwritten note from Phillips encouraging him to read the script. Upon reviewing it, he found a scene where Wooderson watches girls walk by and comments, “No, man. That’s what I love about them high school girls, man. I get older, but they stay the same age.”
Although initially a minor role, McConaughey recognized that this line was pivotal—“a launchpad line” that encapsulated Wooderson’s perspective. He reflected, “You can write a book on that person.”
With two weeks until his audition, he reminisced about a memory from when he was ten years old, watching his older brother Pat. He described how he spotted Pat leaning against a wall in a school smoking area, looking “cooler than James Dean” in his 10-year-old eyes.

“In my 10-year-old eyes, my 17-year-old brother was my hero… that, in my 10-year-old eyes, that’s who it was,” McConaughey noted, explaining how that childhood impression informed his portrayal of Wooderson.
After successfully auditioning for the role, McConaughey’s first day on set started simply with a hair and wardrobe test. Director Richard Linklater then invited him to jump into a scene with Marissa Ribisi, improvising what became the now-iconic line, “Alright, alright, alright.”
The improvised scene drew laughter from the crew, prompting Linklater to invite McConaughey to participate in more scenes throughout the shoot.
When asked by Danson and Harrelson if he ever tires of being greeted with “Alright, alright, alright,” McConaughey’s response was straightforward: “Hell no.”
Dazed and Confused, which also featured actors Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich, Cole Hauser, Parker Posey, Adam Goldberg, Joey Lauren Adams, and Anthony Rapp, grossed over $8 million at the box office, marking a significant milestone in McConaughey’s career.
