Veteran Photographer Matt Dinerstein Passes Away at 69
Matt Dinerstein, a renowned unit still photographer associated with acclaimed productions such as The Bear and various NBC Chicago series, passed away on May 1 due to cancer. He was 69 years old and died in Chicago.
Born in New York in 1956, Dinerstein studied at the University of Denver before establishing his career in Chicago. For over twenty years, he excelled as a unit still photographer, contributing significantly to the visual storytelling of The Bear, capturing the raw essence of its Chicago kitchen setting. His portfolio also includes work on popular NBC series such as Chicago P.D. and Chicago Fire, along with notable titles like ER and Bravo’s Top Chef.
In addition to his television work, Dinerstein photographed stills for several feature films, including Masked and Anonymous (2003), The Lucky Ones (2008), The Merry Gentleman (2008), and Peacock (2010).
Colleagues remember Dinerstein for his exceptional eye, technical skills, and collaborative nature. His brother noted that he was a reliable and trusted presence across various creative teams. Dinerstein retired in 2023 due to vision loss from radiation treatments. Following his photography career, he found joy in skiing with a sighted guide for the visually impaired and engaged in inclusive events such as the Rise to Shine Inclusive Run & Walk, supporting The Chicago Lighthouse.
Dinerstein is survived by his wife, Angela; their children, Alec, Max, and Tess; his brother, David; and his father, Fred. He was predeceased by his mother, Barbara, and his sister, Adrea. A celebration of his life, along with a retrospective photo exhibition, is scheduled for June in Chicago.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a local animal shelter or rescue.
