Marty Supreme Talks About Her Bond with Timothée Chalamet, Her Journey from the ‘Euphoria’ Audition, and What to Expect in ‘I Love LA’ Season 2
Odessa A’zion: From Rising Star to Leading Lady in ‘Marty Supreme’
Odessa A’zion is quickly making a name for herself in Hollywood. Just weeks after her appearance in Rachel Sennott’s comedy series I Love LA, which has already been renewed for a second season, A’zion is poised to star alongside Timothée Chalamet in Josh Safdie’s eagerly awaited A24 film, Marty Supreme.
In a recent Zoom interview, A’zion clarified comments circulating online that suggest her rise to fame occurred overnight. "It’s really funny because I’m seeing a lot of these things online of people being like, ‘Odessa A’zion just came out of nowhere and she’s an industry plant.’ And I’m like, ‘I’ve been acting for 10 years now,’" she explained.
A’zion’s acting journey began with early roles on her mother Pamela Adlon’s show, Better Things. Over the past few years, she has appeared in notable projects such as Am I OK?, the comedy series Ghosts, and the films Pools and Until Dawn. In a unique twist, while filming Until Dawn in Budapest, she stumbled upon a vintage phone booth, which she creatively used to record a self-taped audition for Marty Supreme. The scene features her character, Rachel Mizler, negotiating a ransom involving a dog, set in the 1950s.
In Marty Supreme, Rachel finds herself in a tumultuous love story with Chalamet’s character, Marty Mauser, a skilled ping pong player loosely based on the real-life Marty Reisman. "Ultimately, both Rachel and Marty will reveal a level of determination that leans towards the twisted," A’zion shared, reflecting on the complexities of her character and the film’s narrative.
During the interview, A’zion recalled her first experience at a panel discussion about I Love LA at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival. "That’s not true. I had done it once before for Pools, but that felt like my first ever panel in front of a big audience like that," she noted.
As the premiere of Marty Supreme approaches, A’zion described the whirlwind of the past few months filled with interviews leading up to the film’s debut. "It has definitely been crazy," she admitted. "I’m learning the ways to cope with anxieties of talking to big groups of people. That’s scary. I have stage fright, so that’s really hard."
Discussing her journey to landing the role of Rachel, A’zion spoke about the challenges she faced. "I just feel like when I first started acting, I didn’t book anything for a really long time. It really didn’t happen until I started making my tapes my own and dressing as the character," she explained. Her scrappy determination paid off, with her auditions earning her praise from the film’s casting director, Jennifer Venditti.
Reflecting on her collaboration with Chalamet, A’zion described their initial interaction as a pivotal moment. "Josh thought it would be a good idea to have us go and have breakfast together," she recalled. This meeting allowed her to establish a connection with Chalamet before stepping into their roles.
A’zion regards Rachel as a multi-faceted character who embodies both chaos and empowerment. "She’s so confident in what she wants and what she believes she deserves for herself," A’zion said, expressing her admiration for the character’s strength and determination.
As she prepares for the film’s premiere, A’zion shared her excitement, albeit tempered by nerves. "I’m really, really excited for people to see the movie because it’s just such an incredible film," she said. She also looks forward to returning for Season 2 of I Love LA, where she will rejoin the cast for more exciting adventures in her hometown of Los Angeles.
Marty Supreme hits theaters on December 25th, marking a significant milestone in A’zion’s burgeoning career.
