Luka Doncic Faces $50,000 Fine for Gesture Made to Referee
Luka Doncic Fined $50,000 for Gesture Towards Official
Luka Doncic, the star player for the Los Angeles Lakers, has been fined $50,000 for an inappropriate gesture directed at a game official during the Lakers’ recent victory against the New York Knicks, according to an announcement from the NBA. The incident occurred in the third quarter of the game, which the Lakers won 110-97.
During a pivotal moment, Doncic was frustrated when he did not receive a charge call after attempting to defend Knicks forward Mohamed Diawara. Following the play, which resulted in a layup for Josh Hart, Doncic was seen lying on the floor and gestured by rubbing his fingers together, an action interpreted as flashing money toward the nearest referee.
Despite the incident, Doncic was not penalized during the game. However, he has faced scrutiny this season for his interactions with officiating, accumulating 15 technical fouls thus far. He is now just one technical foul away from a mandatory one-game suspension and trails only Dillon Brooks, who leads the league with 16 technicals.
Later in the same game, Doncic successfully drew a charge, marking a season-high 12 charges drawn, which ranks third on the Lakers, who lead the NBA with a total of 53 charges. Teammates Marcus Smart and Austin Reaves have contributed significantly, with 16 and 14 charges drawn, respectively. Doncic humorously acknowledged their influence, stating, “Just trying to copy Marcus and AR.”
