Liz Meriwether Continues Partnership with 20th Television
Liz Meriwether Extends Her Legacy at 20th Television with New Overall Deal
Liz Meriwether, renowned for creating the hit series New Girl, has solidified her long-standing relationship with 20th Television by signing a new overall deal that marks over 20 years at the studio, which is part of Disney Television Studios.
Meriwether began her journey as a New York playwright before selling a comedy project to 20th Television. This endeavor culminated in a pilot airing on Fox in 2007. Following that, she created and executive produced New Girl, which became a significant success, alongside other series under multiple agreements with the studio.
Transitioning from network comedy, Meriwether’s career evolved as she ventured into dramatic streaming content. Her notable work includes the 2022 Hulu series The Dropout, which starred Amanda Seyfried and garnered critical acclaim, including an Emmy Award for Seyfried’s performance.
In addition, Meriwether co-created and executive produced FX on Hulu’s Dying for Sex, a series that earned actress Michelle Williams a Golden Globe and other accolades, including a recent Writers Guild of America Award for Limited Series. Both The Dropout and Dying for Sex received nominations for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series at the Emmys.
Currently, Meriwether is in production on a new series for Hulu, a psychological thriller titled Furious, which stars Emmy Rossum and is loosely inspired by the 1987 film Black Widow.
Karey Burke, President of 20th Television, praised Meriwether, stating, “Liz is a once-in-a-generation voice, who captivates fans with each story she brings to life. Her heart is massive, her humor is razor-sharp, and her storytelling is extraordinary. We are beyond lucky that she will continue to call Disney her creative home.”
Under her new multi-year contract, Meriwether will continue to write, develop, and produce for both linear and streaming platforms, with a focus on Disney Entertainment Television.
Expressing her gratitude, Meriwether remarked, “I feel forever grateful for the support of Dana Walden, Eric Schrier, Karey Burke, Carolyn Cassidy, and everyone at 20th TV. I’m so thrilled I get to keep making television at the studio where I have worked, laughed, cursed, cried, and occasionally slept for my entire career.”
Dana Walden, now President and Chief Creative Officer of Disney, reminisced about the early days of Meriwether’s career at 20th Television, highlighting her dedication and drive. Walden described Meriwether as “outrageously funny, endlessly creative, wildly prolific and also one of the greatest people you’ll ever have the good fortune to know.”
