Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Musical Film ‘Octet’ Welcomes Jonathan Groff, Rachel Zegler, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and More
Casting Announced for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Film Adaptation of Octet
In a significant development for the upcoming film adaptation of Octet, directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, an eight-member cast has been revealed. The production features notable talents such as Jonathan Groff, Rachel Zegler, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Gaten Matarazzo, among others.
The casting details were made public today by Miranda and his production company, 5000 Broadway Productions. In addition to Groff, Zegler, Ralph, and Matarazzo, the ensemble includes Amanda Seyfried, Phillipa Soo, Paul-Jordan Jansen, and Tramell Tillman.
Julie Oh, Head of Film & TV at 5000 Broadway Productions, along with John Skidmore from Best Kept Secret Productions and Luis A. Miranda, Jr., President of 5000 Broadway Productions, will serve as producers for Octet. The screenplay is being penned by Dave Malloy, known for his work on Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812.
The premise of Octet centers on eight individuals immersed in the digital world who convene in a church basement and place their phones in a locked box. The narrative delves into their struggles with digital dependency, showcasing their compulsions through the vibrant medium of their voices.
The character roles are as follows:
- Groff, known for Mindhunter and Broadway productions such as Hamilton, will portray "Henry."
- Jansen, featured in Sweeney Todd, takes on the role of "Ed."
- Matarazzo, famous for Stranger Things, will play "Toby."
- Ralph, recognized for Abbott Elementary, is cast as "Paula."
- Seyfried, seen in The Housemaid, will assume the role of "Jessica."
- Soo, from Dopesick, plays "Karly."
- Tillman, from Severance, is cast as "Marvin."
- Zegler, acclaimed for her role in West Side Story, will portray "Velma."
Executive Producers include Johnny Holland, Owen Panettieri, and Diana DiMenna. The film is being financed and produced by Sander Jacobs, Caren Jacobs, TodayTix Group, Jeffrey Seller, Teresa Tsai, and John Gore for Broadway.com. Malloy will not only adapt his musical but will also serve as an Executive Producer.
Octet marks Miranda’s follow-up to his critically-acclaimed directorial debut, tick, tick…BOOM!, which received two Academy Award nominations. Julie Oh played a pivotal role as a producer on the film and previously managed its acquisition by Netflix.
