Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Attend Met Gala Pre-party Amid Protests
Lauren Sánchez and billionaire Jeff Bezos attended a pre-party for the Met Gala hosted by Anna Wintour on Sunday evening, despite ongoing protests against their presence at the event. Photos obtained by Page Six show the couple arriving hand in hand at Wintour’s private residence in New York City.
Sánchez looked striking in a red wrap top and matching maxi skirt, while Bezos donned a gray suit with a dark button-up shirt and glossy shoes. The couple’s appearance coincided with demonstrations regarding wealth inequality, climate issues, and labor rights.
Notably, activists projected messages onto the side of a building visible from Bezos’ penthouse, with one reading, “NO RED CARPET FOR TRUMP’S BILLIONAIRES.” Another message urged, “IF YOU CAN BUY THE MET GALA YOU CAN PAY MORE TAXES,” while a third called for a boycott of the event altogether.
Images from the protests illustrated these sentiments, showing slogans like "BOYCOTT THE BEZOS MET GALA" aimed at the couple, who have been criticized for their lavish lifestyle amidst rising economic disparities.
As Bezos, 62, and Sánchez, 56, prepare to serve as honorary co-chairs for the Met Gala, they have reportedly contributed a minimum of $10 million to sponsor the event, which raises funds for the Anna Wintour Costume Center at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year’s Met Gala seeks to spotlight the intersection of fashion and culture, with a host of notable figures, including Beyoncé and Nicole Kidman, joining them as co-chairs.
Sánchez, who recently married Bezos in a high-profile ceremony, is set to share the spotlight with significant figures in fashion at the upcoming gala. However, the event has also drawn criticism, prompting some high-profile attendees, such as Bella Hadid, Zendaya, and Meryl Streep, to withdraw from participating due to the couple’s involvement.
In light of these developments, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced he would also be absent from the gala, stating it “goes against everything he believes in,” as he has openly criticized billionaire culture.
The juxtaposition of glamorous events against a backdrop of social activism continues to raise questions about wealth, privilege, and responsibility in contemporary society.
