Laura Linney Joins the Cast of HBO’s New DC Series ‘Lanterns’ — Check Out the Latest Trailer
Laura Linney has joined the cast of Lanterns, a new DC series set to premiere on August 16 on HBO and HBO Max.
Linney briefly appeared in the recently released trailer for the superhero series, which features Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre in lead roles.
The ensemble cast also includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.
Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart (Pierre) alongside Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Chandler), as the two intergalactic police officers delve into a dark mystery rooted on Earth while investigating a murder in the American heartland.
In an interview with Men’s Health, showrunner Chris Mundy described the series as “as much of a buddy cop show as a superhero show.”
Mundy elaborated, “Our show is in a lot of ways about replacement — when should someone step aside and when is it time for the next person to take the reins? That push and pull between those two characters is really important. So much of the power that John has is by not taking the bait, understanding that you lose your power if you’re yelling and screaming. That’s what we’re trying to convey: He knows he belongs, so he doesn’t have to overcompensate.”
He added, “There’s a real balance there that’s just innately inside of Aaron. He’s big. He’s an intimidating presence just physically. But there’s a softness to him, too. There’s a thoughtfulness. You can’t teach that.”
Based on characters from the Green Lantern universe, Lanterns is a production of HBO in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The pilot episode is co-written by Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who serve as co-creators. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also attached to direct.
The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, King, James Gunn, Peter Safran, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes.
