LAPD Takes Action: Arrest Made in Connection with 25 Burglary Cases in LA
Police Arrest Suspect Linked to 25 Burglaries in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES — Authorities have announced the arrest of 22-year-old Kevin Diaz, who is believed to be connected to approximately 25 residential burglaries in the Los Angeles area, including 14 incidents in the San Fernando Valley. The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in a concerning string of thefts.
On May 4, Diaz was apprehended after police responded to a "hot prowl" burglary call on Rexford Drive in West Los Angeles. A resident alerted law enforcement after seeing suspicious activity on surveillance footage, which showed a man attempting to break a glass door. Officers arrived promptly, discovering Diaz inside the residence. Following a brief foot chase, he was taken into custody and is currently being held on $50,000 bail.
LAPD investigators have linked Diaz to a total of 25 burglaries across the region. Despite a reported 47% decrease in residential thefts in the San Fernando Valley compared to the previous year, a recent spike in burglaries prompted an intensified police response.
Mayor Karen Bass emphasized the need for increased resources and patrols in response to the spike in criminal activity. "This is exactly why we have focused additional resources to the Valley and increased coordination across LAPD Bureaus: to catch these bad actors and get them off the streets," Bass stated. She asserted that the arrest underscores her initiative to hire more officers capable of responding swiftly to emerging crime patterns.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell also expressed commitment, stating, "When our investigators identified this burglary pattern, we surged resources, increased visibility, and tightened collaboration across our specialized units. I want Angelenos to know that we are fully committed to stopping these organized burglary crews."
The LAPD suspects that Diaz may be linked to a South American organized theft group, prompting increased cooperation among various law enforcement units. The investigation into this broader network remains ongoing.
Diaz is facing charges of first-degree residential burglary, and detectives are working together with the Commercial Crimes and Robbery-Homicide Divisions to determine if other individuals are involved in this criminal organization.
