Lakers’ Playoff Hopes Dwindle After 131-108 Loss to Thunder in Game 3
Thunder Dominate Lakers in Game 3, Move Closer to Western Conference Finals
In a commanding performance, the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 131-108 in Game 3 of the second round on Saturday night, positioning themselves just one win away from reaching the Western Conference Finals.
Ajay Mitchell shined for the Thunder, achieving career playoff highs with 24 points and 10 assists. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander contributed 23 points and nine assists, helping Oklahoma City maintain a perfect 7-0 record in these playoffs. This marks a notable achievement as they become the sixth defending champion in NBA history to start the postseason with seven consecutive wins. The Thunder’s three wins over the Lakers have come by a total margin of 59 points.
Game 3 mirrored many aspects of Game 2, with the Lakers once again fighting hard to stay competitive. Despite their efforts, the Thunder demonstrated their signature efficiency, outscoring the Lakers 33-20 in the third quarter and maintaining control through the final minutes. Chet Holmgren supported the victory with 18 points and nine rebounds.
LeBron James led the Lakers with 19 points, eight assists, and six rebounds, while Austin Reaves added 17 points and nine assists. However, both players struggled offensively, shooting a combined 12 for 32. Rui Hachimura provided 21 points, but it was insufficient to keep Los Angeles in contention. Luke Kennard contributed 18 points, but the Lakers have now lost five of their last six games since a promising start against Houston.
Star player Luka Doncic remained sidelined for the Lakers due to a hamstring strain, missing 14 consecutive games. His absence, which typically requires at least two months of recovery, has significantly impacted the team’s performance.
Gilgeous-Alexander faced a strong defensive effort from the Lakers yet managed to deliver his most significant scoring output of the series, overcoming a shaky start where he missed nine of his first 11 shots. Meanwhile, Mitchell continued his impressive playoff emergence, scoring a minimum of 14 points in his last six games with a shooting performance of 10 for 17.
Although Los Angeles initially held a small lead at halftime—aided by Hachimura’s 16 points—the Thunder quickly reclaimed control after the break, establishing a 13-point lead in the third quarter.
The Thunder will look to close out the series in Game 4, set for Monday night in Los Angeles. Notably, third-leading scorer Jalen Williams continues to be absent for Oklahoma City due to a strained hamstring, missing his fifth consecutive game.
The upcoming matchup promises to be pivotal as the Thunder seek to solidify their place in the next round of the playoffs.
