Kirsten Dunst to Star as Alex in the New Minecraft Movie Sequel from Warner Bros. and Legendary
Kirsten Dunst Joins Cast of Upcoming Minecraft Movie Sequel
Kirsten Dunst has officially joined the cast of the untitled sequel to the Minecraft Movie, produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary.
In this sequel, Dunst will portray Alex, one of the main avatars featured in the popular Minecraft video game series developed by Mojang Studios. She will be joining a robust cast that includes returning stars Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge.
While details regarding the sequel’s plot remain undisclosed, the first film introduced audiences to four misfit characters—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Brooks)—who find themselves navigating their everyday struggles after being transported through a mysterious portal to the Overworld, a fantastical world brimming with creativity and adventure.
To return home, the group is challenged to master this new environment and defend it against threats like Piglins and Zombies. They embark on a magical quest alongside an unexpected ally, Steve (Black), who is an expert crafter. This adventure compels them to tap into their creativity and develop the skills essential for their return to reality.
The original Minecraft Movie proved to be a massive success, achieving a record $163 million in domestic box office sales for its opening weekend—the highest ever for a video game adaptation—and grossing nearly $1 billion globally.
Jared Hess will be returning to the director’s chair for the sequel, working from a script co-written with Chris Galletta. The production team includes Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Momoa, and the late Jill Messick, with executive producers Jay Ashenfelter, Jen Conroy, Brian Mendoza, Jon Berg, and Jonathan Spaihts. Warner Bros. has scheduled the film’s release for July 23, 2027.
Dunst recently starred alongside Channing Tatum in Roofman, a true-crime dramedy for Paramount, and has also appeared in Alex Garland’s Civil War for A24 and Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Next, Dunst will star alongside Keanu Reeves in Ruben Östlund’s film The Entertainment System Is Down. She is represented by Entertainment 360, UTA, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
