Demond Wilson, widely recognized for his role in the iconic NBC sitcom Sanford and Son, has passed away at the age of 79.
Demond Wilson Jr. confirmed the news, stating that his father died at home in Palm Springs on January 30, following complications from cancer. Specific details about the type of cancer were not disclosed.
“I loved him,” Wilson Jr. shared. “He was a great man.” Mark Goldman, Demond’s publicist, expressed the family’s sadness in a statement. “The family of Demond Wilson is deeply saddened by his passing. At this time, they ask for privacy as they grieve. No further details are available.”
Goldman praised Wilson’s impact, noting, “Personally, I had the privilege of working with Demond for 15 years, and his loss is profoundly felt. He was an unbelievable man, and his impact will never be forgotten. The family appreciates the support and understanding of the community during this difficult time.”

Wilson began his acting career in the 1970s with an uncredited role in Cotton Comes to Harlem. He subsequently appeared in various shows, including All in the Family, Mission: Impossible, and Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In. His big break came in 1972 when he was cast as Lamont Sanford in Sanford and Son.
The series, which aired from 1972 to 1977, became NBC’s highest-rated show at the time. The second season ranked as television’s second most-watched series.
After Sanford and Son, Wilson, born Grady Demond Wilson, played Raymond Ellis in the sitcom Baby… I’m Back from 1977 to 1978. He made guest appearances on other notable shows such as The Love Boat and Today’s F.B.I..

Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, Wilson appeared in several films including Full Moon High, The Organization, and Dealing: Or The Berkeley-to-Boston Forty-Brick Lost-Bag Blues. He joined the cast of The New Odd Couple in 1982, portraying Oscar Madison; however, the show ran for just one season.
Following a brief hiatus from acting, he returned in 1993 with the film Me and the Kid. His next notable role came nearly a decade later in 2000 with the film Hammerlock, and he also made guest appearances on the series Girlfriends from 2004 to 2005.
Wilson’s final appearance was in the 2023 series Eleanor’s Beach, marking over fifty years since his debut role in acting.
