Kino Lorber Announces Release Dates for Family Drama ‘Jimpa’ Featuring Olivia Colman, John Lithgow, and Aud Mason-Hyde
EXCLUSIVE: Following its acquisition of North American distribution rights to Jimpa, Kino Lorber has announced a release date for the film. It is set to premiere at The Quad Cinema in New York and Laemmle Monica in Los Angeles on Friday, February 6th, with plans for a national expansion thereafter.
After debuting at Sundance, Jimpa will also open both NewFest Pride and Frameline film festivals. The film draws inspiration from the personal experiences of filmmaker Sophie Hyde within a queer family dynamic. In the story, Olivia Colman portrays Hannah, a filmmaker who travels to Amsterdam with her trans nonbinary teenager, Frances (played by Mason-Hyde), to visit their gay grandfather, affectionately known as Jimpa (Lithgow). When Frances expresses a wish to stay with Jimpa for a year abroad, Hannah is challenged to reevaluate her beliefs about parenting and the family narratives she has constructed. The film explores themes of aging and idealism as Jimpa confronts the realities of growing old as a gay man, while Frances navigates the disappointment of imperfect role models. Through this journey, Hannah learns to reconcile the differing viewpoints of her father and child.
Hyde, who gained recognition for her previous Sundance film, the sex comedy Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, co-wrote the script for Jimpa with Matthew Cormack. She produced the film alongside Liam Heyen, Bryan Mason, and Marleen Slot. The cast also includes Daniel Henshall, Kate Box, Eamon Farren, and Cody Fern.
