Kings Put Up a Fight but Fall Short Against Strong Avalanche in Playoff Opener
DENVER — The Los Angeles Kings faced disappointment once again in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, succumbing to the Colorado Avalanche, 2-1, on Sunday. This marks the fifth consecutive year the Kings have lost their playoff opener, having previously been eliminated by the Edmonton Oilers over the last four seasons.
The Avalanche struck first late in the second period with a goal from Artturi Lehkonen, followed by Logan O’Connor extending the lead early in the third. The Kings managed to make a late-game push, pulling goaltender Anton Forsberg with just under three minutes remaining. Artemi Panarin capitalized on a power play, scoring 35 seconds later, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Despite facing a different opponent, the Kings found themselves up against a formidable Avalanche team that won the Presidents’ Trophy this season, recognizing them as the league’s best team based on regular-season performance. The Avalanche led the league in goals scored and fewest allowed, further solidifying their status as a serious contender.
Colorado came out strong, firing four shots on goal within the first four minutes. Forsberg, however, was instrumental in keeping the Kings in the game, finishing with 28 saves. The Avalanche thought they had scored just minutes into the second period when O’Connor found the net, but the goal was disallowed due to goalie interference involving Jack Drury. Despite protests from the Colorado bench, the call stood after a review.
Lehkonen eventually found the back of the net, slipping a rebound past Forsberg with 4:31 remaining in the second period. The Avalanche increased their advantage early in the third when O’Connor capitalized on a turnover in the Kings’ zone.
As tensions rose, the game turned chippy, leading to a Kings power play that brought them back within one goal. However, Colorado successfully defended their lead to secure the win, taking a 1-0 series lead.
The best-of-seven playoff series will continue on Tuesday night in Denver before shifting to Crypto.com Arena for Game 3 on Thursday.
