Kim Kardashian’s 2026 Met Gala Breastplate Inspired by a 90s Fashion Icon
Kim Kardashian Makes a Statement at Met Gala 2026
Kim Kardashian captivated audiences at the 2026 Met Gala with a striking interpretation of the "Costume Art" theme, presenting a bold metallic orange breastplate designed by renowned British Pop artist Allen Jones. This audacious piece pays homage to artistic expression while eliciting memories from the past.
Kardashian’s breastplate, crafted from fiberglass, was inspired by a piece originally modeled by supermodel Kate Moss in a well-known 2013 portrait, titled "Body Armour." The original photograph was sold for approximately $52,000 at a Christie’s auction and later featured prominently in a retrospective of Jones’ work at the Royal Academy in 2014.
The breastplate has a rich history, tracing back to the late 1960s when Jones created it as a body cast for a film project that ultimately never materialized. For this year’s gala, Kardashian’s version was repainted in a shiny orange at an auto body shop, a color choice that mirrors Moss’s original look. Kardashian expressed her desire for something unique, stating, “I wanted something original — I didn’t want to cast my own body. Allen Jones would be iconic. Sexy. Classic. Cool. Innovative.”
Designer Patrick Whitaker and Keir Malem collaborated to create a leather skirt that seamlessly complemented the breastplate, which Kardashian had cut down to the hips for ease of movement. Jones further enhanced the piece with artistic paintwork.
Monday marked Kardashian’s 13th appearance at the Met Gala, a series that features memorable outfits, including the “dripping wet” Thierry Mugler mini-dress and the controversial Marilyn Monroe dress in 2022. Each appearance has solidified her status as a prominent figure in fashion and pop culture, continuously pushing the boundaries of design and artistry.
