Kevin Nealon: A 40-Year Journey in Stand-Up Comedy
Kevin Nealon Reflects on His Comedy Journey Ahead of BroadStage Debut
This month, Emmy-nominated comedian Kevin Nealon is embracing a lively routine while on Adam Sandler’s "You’re My Best Friend Tour." Recently, Nealon joined his friends, including Sandler, Dana Carvey, and Kevin James, for a game of basketball at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
“It’s just a blast,” Nealon remarked. “Every day we go to a different city, and when we get to the city we go right to a gym to play basketball or swim. Then we go to the venue and start doing the soundtrack for the show, and it’s the same thing over and over every day for the last two weeks. We go to restaurants late at night, and we just eat too much food, and we laugh. It’s really pretty surreal.”
Despite his enjoyment of performing in front of crowds ranging from 10,000 to 12,000 people, Nealon is looking forward to a different type of experience: his BroadStage debut on November 1.
“I do stand-up around town quite a bit,” he explained. “But those are only about 15 minutes. When I’m doing this night of comedy at BroadStage, it will be over an hour of material that I’ve been honing for the last year or two at small clubs. I’m really excited to be able to do that much time. It’s a real treat.”
Nealon recently appeared in “Happy Gilmore 2,” reprising a role from the original “Happy Gilmore,” and his latest comedy special, “Loose in the Crotch,” will be released soon, along with accompanying tour dates.
With four decades of experience in television and film, Nealon once held the record for the longest tenure on “Saturday Night Live,” participating in nine seasons and appearing in 102 episodes of Showtime’s “Weeds.” Nonetheless, his true passion remains stand-up comedy.
“It’s all I ever wanted to do before I got into anything else,” he stated. “It’s really my passion, and it still is. The highlight of my career was the first time I did ‘The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.’ Nothing beats that—not ‘Saturday Night Live’, not ‘Weeds’, not an Adam Sandler film. I’ve always wanted to do stand-up, and I’ve never left it. Even during the pandemic, we were doing it in backyards and parking lots, so it never really stopped.”
Nealon draws extensively from his personal life for comedic inspiration, exploring themes of marriage, fatherhood, and life choices as he connects with audiences. “I’m at that point in my life where I can talk about anything and feel comfortable,” he noted. “I discuss marriage, my son going off to college, and my poor choices in life.”
In addition to his stand-up work, Nealon has created a YouTube talk show titled “Hiking with Kevin,” earning ten episodes licensed for streaming on FOX Nation. As he embarks on the fifth season of the show, Nealon manages every aspect of production, including filming with a GoPro and editing with Adobe Premiere Pro.
While frequently touring, Nealon maintains strong ties to Los Angeles, where he began his career. “I had my first experience on stage at the Improv in Hollywood, and there’s a lot of history for me here,” he said. “I love all the comedy clubs in LA and the comics I engage with. Our son goes to USC, and for now, LA is where I work, play, and live.”
Reflecting on his evolution as a comedian, Nealon shared insights into his development and growth in the craft. “When you start off doing stand-up, nobody really has their own unique point of view or style. You’re influenced by others,” he explained. “Eventually, with experience, you start gaining the confidence to figure out who you are, and that style continues to evolve.”
Kevin Nealon’s performance promises to be an engaging experience for audiences at BroadStage, presenting a unique blend of humor shaped by his life journey.
