Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver Share Their Thoughts on Leaving Grey’s Anatomy and Celebrate Their Journey as Owen and Teddy
The Season 22 finale of Grey’s Anatomy, set to air on May 7, will be a significant one as it bids farewell to long-standing cast members Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver. McKidd, who has been with the show for 18 seasons, and Raver, a regular for 12 seasons, portray the complex characters Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman on the ABC medical drama. McKidd has also directed 48 episodes, including the upcoming season finale, which recently concluded production.
Owen and Teddy are among the last characters created by the show’s original executive producer, Shonda Rhimes. McKidd has expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to bring Owen to life and for the creative direction provided by Rhimes.
"Playing Dr. Owen Hunt and directing on the show have both shaped me enormously," McKidd stated. "I’m particularly thankful to Shonda Rhimes for creating Owen, and for the encouragement she gave me as I stepped into directing."
Raver echoed this sentiment, expressing her appreciation for the role she has played since joining the series in Season 6. "Sixteen years ago, I had the incredible privilege of stepping into this role thanks to the vision of Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers," she noted. Raver also acknowledged the impact of current showrunner Meg Marinis and longtime director/executive producer Debbie Allen, who has mentored her in directing.
Rhimes hinted at a “happy ending” for the characters, who began to rekindle their romance in recent episodes. Marinis collaborated on the farewell narrative, sharing that while their story is concluding, it is "never truly a goodbye."
With McKidd being part of Grey’s for nearly two decades, and Raver’s presence shaping the narrative for over a decade, both actors leave a lasting legacy on the show. McKidd joined in the 5th season, while Raver initially appeared between Seasons 6 and 8, returning as a series regular in Season 15.
