Former NFL Player Kevin Johnson Found Dead in Willowbrook
Kevin Johnson, a former defensive lineman for the Philadelphia Eagles and Oakland Raiders, was discovered dead at a homeless encampment in Willowbrook on Wednesday. He was 55 years old.
Authorities from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are currently treating Johnson’s death as a potential homicide. The county medical examiner noted that he had sustained stab wounds and blunt force trauma to the head.
Deputies responded to reports of an unconscious man in the 1300 block of East 120th Street. Upon their arrival, emergency personnel from the Los Angeles County Fire Department pronounced Johnson dead at the scene.
As the investigation unfolds, no arrests have yet been made. The Sheriff’s Department is urging anyone with information to come forward.
Johnson was selected as a fourth-round draft pick by the New England Patriots in 1993 after a collegiate career that included stints at Texas Southern University and L.A. Harbor College. He helped lead Westchester High School to the 1987 2-A City Section championship during his junior year and to the 3A championship game as a senior.
At Texas Southern, a Historically Black College and University, he played alongside Michael Strahan, a future NFL Hall of Famer. After his brief tenure with the Patriots and the Minnesota Vikings, Johnson signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he played from 1995 to 1996. During this time, he participated in 23 games, recording 43 tackles and seven sacks. Notably, he returned a fumble for a touchdown against the St. Louis Rams in 1995 and contributed to the Eagles’ playoff games that season.
In 1997, Johnson played 15 games for the Oakland Raiders, marking the end of his NFL career. He later transitioned to the Arena Football League, playing for Orlando and helping the Predators secure an Arena Bowl championship. He also had a stint with the L.A. Avengers.
The circumstances surrounding Johnson’s death have shocked many within the football community and raised concerns about safety in homeless encampments. As officials continue their investigation, the former player’s legacy in football remains a poignant reminder of both his athletic accomplishments and the challenges faced by those living on the margins.
