Jimmy Buffett was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, leading to a heartfelt tribute that emphasized his enduring legacy. The event took place in October 2024, featuring performances by fellow musicians Kenny Chesney, James Taylor, and Mac McAnally.
During the ceremony, McAnally brought a small portion of Buffett’s ashes on stage, a gesture that added a poignant touch to the proceedings. Chesney, in an appearance on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show, revealed that McAnally had been given the ashes by Buffett’s daughter, Savannah.
“We were backstage, we were sitting back there warming up… And he had Jimmy’s ashes in his coat pocket,” Chesney recounted, highlighting how Buffett’s spirit was felt during the induction. “So even after he passed, Jimmy found a way to join the party,” he added.
Chesney, along with Taylor and McAnally, performed Buffett’s hit “Come Monday” against a backdrop of a nostalgic photo of the late musician. Taylor, who inducted Buffett in the Musical Excellence category, expressed the sentiment shared by many: “We’re three old friends of Jimmy Buffett, and we miss him. This is a song of his that we like a lot.”

Their friendship began at the Four Seasons Hotel and later included memorable moments, such as spending Christmas together in Key West. In a past conversation, he remarked, “It’s surreal that you become friends with that person and collaborate… And that’s what Jimmy was for me.”
Buffett’s legacy continues to resonate following his passing from skin cancer in September 2023 at the age of 76. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jane, along with daughters Savannah and Delaney, and son Cameron.
Delaney has shared her intention to honor her father’s influence by featuring his music in her directorial debut, Adult Best Friends. In a recent interview, she expressed, “If I can work as hard as he did and just make people happy in some capacity, then I feel like I will have done him proud.”
