Kenneth Branagh Would Enjoy Directing Another Thor Film Inspired by the Style of 2017’s Logan
After a 15-year hiatus, Kenneth Branagh is contemplating a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with a potential sequel featuring Thor, the beloved Norse god.
Branagh, who directed the original *Thor* in 2011, expressed a desire to “finish my relationship with that character” in a sequel that would explore darker themes and “take the character into a glorious twilight.”
In an interview with Business Insider, he stated, “I definitely was ready for another, for sure, but not right then. Marvel shoots are intense. Marvel postproduction is more intense — wildly exciting but super intense. I definitely needed to smell the roses. Kevin Feige was very understanding, and so was the cast. I needed a break.”
Branagh elaborated on his creative ambitions, noting, “Part of me would love to finish my relationship with that character. I’d always wanted to do more and indeed had a couple of ideas, more in the territory of James Mangold’s brilliant *Logan*. I would love to see Chris Hemsworth and the others have their own individual final story that takes Thor into a glorious twilight.”

As a fan of the franchise, Branagh believes it would be “something very beautiful to take those characters into their own particular sunset,” but he noted that whether he would direct such a project remains uncertain.

Branagh acknowledged the expansive planning within the Marvel Universe, stating, “They are so far deep into the future of the Marvel Universe that I’m sure whatever plans they have for it are already kind of set. All I know is there’s something beautiful to be had out of arriving at a conclusion for that arc of those stories with those characters and those actors.”
After Branagh’s directorial debut with *Thor*, subsequent films included *Thor: The Dark World* (2013) directed by Alan Taylor, and *Thor: Ragnarok* (2017) and *Thor: Love and Thunder* (2022) directed by Taika Waititi.
