NEED TO KNOW
- Kate Middleton is “at the red-hot center of one of the great social policy issues of our time” with her focus on children.
- The Princess of Wales collaborated with Harvard University’s Professor Robert Waldinger for an essay on this topic.
- Princess Kate is increasingly regarded as an expert on early childhood development.
Kate Middleton is gradually resuming public duties, nearly a year after announcing her cancer remission. Central to her renewed focus is her advocacy for early childhood development.
In a recent essay co-written with Professor Robert Waldinger, Kate positioned herself at the forefront of important discussions concerning children’s screen time, a topic described by author Sally Bedell Smith as “the red-hot center of one of the great social policy issues of our time.”
In the essay, the Princess, now 43, addressed the “technological interference” caused by smartphones and tablets, stating it affects one of the most crucial gifts we can provide to children: attention.
“Our smartphones, tablets and computers have become sources of constant distraction, fragmenting our focus and preventing us from giving others the undivided attention that relationships require,” she conveyed.

Bedell Smith remarked that Princess Kate is actively using resources from her Centre for Early Childhood to fund meaningful studies aimed at identifying issues that parents face, especially those related to digital media.
On November 18, Middleton broadened her influence during the Future Workforce Summit in London, where she engaged with 80 business leaders and academics.

During the summit, Princess Kate expressed commitment to her organization, launched in June 2021, stating, “At The Centre for Early Childhood, we believe that we must do all we can to create the conditions for love to flourish. That is how we invest in our future.”
Professor Waldinger highlighted the often-overlooked importance of early childhood development. “What she’s doing by lending her voice to this is huge,” he said. “Bringing in business leaders who can make a difference is an incredible way to use the platform she has.”
After the event, Kate engaged with participants, discussing issues that had arisen during the discussions. Attendees noted her deep understanding of the subject, solidifying her determination to contribute significantly.
“She has really dug into this issue,” Waldinger remarked. “This is her signature issue, and she’s serious about it and doing her best to make a contribution.” He noted her efforts to have informed discussions as a strategic advantage of her position.

At the summit, Kate urged business leaders to envision a world where environments are built on love and tenderness, not just productivity and success. “Imagine a world where each of these environments were built on valuing time and tenderness just as much as productivity and success,” she stated.
She acknowledged the ongoing challenge for business leaders in balancing profitability with a positive societal impact, emphasizing that these objectives need not be at odds. “But the two are not, and should not be incompatible,” she added.
Eamon McCrory, head of the Anna Freud mental health charity, who has collaborated with Kate for nearly a decade, expressed appreciation for her efforts. “The Princess is continuing to build a societal narrative about the importance of childhood, relationships, and healthy development,” he noted.
“Her recent essay, as well as her recent talk, emphasizes how we need to come together to strengthen bonds to protect well-being and prevent mental health issues.”

Bedell Smith remarked on the compelling nature of Kate’s address to business leaders, reflecting her in-depth understanding of the issues at hand. “It means a great deal to her,” she concluded.
Catherine Mayer, a biographer of King Charles, commented, “She is being treated as an expert on early childhood, and people feel she is genuinely contributing to that area.”
