Kate Hudson Expands Her Musical Horizons in ‘Song Sung Blue’
Kate Hudson is stepping into the spotlight as she stars in the upcoming film Song Sung Blue, a biopic centered around a real-life Neil Diamond tribute band. Hudson recently shared insights about her experience leading the film, explaining that becoming familiar with Diamond’s music was a new venture for her.
“Neil Diamond wasn’t someone that I grew up with,” Hudson told PEOPLE. “So it was a nice discovery for me to get to know his music.” This musical exploration occurred while she portrayed Claire Sardina, part of a husband-and-wife duo who formed a tribute band in the late 1980s.
In Song Sung Blue, Hudson stars alongside Hugh Jackman as Mike Sardina, showcasing performances of many of Diamond’s iconic songs. “Having Neil Diamond’s music as the backdrop to play these real-life people, who just were such fans, was wonderful,” Hudson added. “Watching the movie was just such a joy… It’s entertaining, but you walk away feeling inspired.”

Hudson expressed her appreciation for the film’s tone, stating, “I love that it lacks cynicism. There’s something really pure about this movie. It delivers something unexpected to an audience.”
Directed by Craig Brewer and based on the documentary by Greg Kohs, Song Sung Blue chronicles the personal and professional journey of Lightning & Thunder. It poignantly captures the couple’s challenges, including a tragic accident affecting Claire and the passing of Mike due to cardiac issues in 2006.
Through this project, Hudson has developed a close relationship with the real-life Sardina family, also meeting Diamond himself in August when she visited his home in Colorado. She shared a moment with him on Instagram, writing, “Just sitting on the porch with @neildiamond sharing all kinds of stories. Sweet Neil, we love you! Thank you for sharing your music with us and for supporting our film.”
Song Sung Blue is set to be released in theaters on December 25.
