At a recent screening in Los Angeles, Goldie Hawn moderated a Q&A session for her daughter Kate Hudson’s new film, Song Sung Blue, marking a heartfelt exchange between the two actresses. This biopic captures the essence of Hudson’s character, who is part of a Neil Diamond tribute band, Lightning & Thunder.
During the event on January 13, Hawn, 80, emphasized the unique blend of comedy and tragedy in acting, stating, "What is great about comedy is sending up what’s really tragic." Hudson, 46, echoed her mother’s sentiments, noting her admiration for comedic actors and their often-overlooked dramatic talents.
As the discussion turned personal, Hudson asked her mother what she frequently tells her. Hawn playfully responded with uncertainty, prompting laughter from the audience. "She says, ‘You’re a dramatic actress’," Hudson explained, to which Hawn added, "Yeah, but you’ve got funny," leading Hudson to concur.

Craig Brewer’s Song Sung Blue stars Hudson and Hugh Jackman as Mike and Claire Sardina, a couple renowned for their Neil Diamond tribute band in Milwaukee during the 1990s. The film aims to illustrate how extraordinary lives can stem from seemingly ordinary beginnings.
During the Q&A, Hawn shared her own emotional experience watching the film, admitting she was surprised by its depth. "I cried so hard… I thought it was going to be a comedy!" she remarked, questioning whether the film is a comedy, drama, or love story. Hudson suggested it is "like an epic," conveying the notion that a person’s life can be remarkable despite appearing straightforward.
Moreover, Hawn disclosed that she and her partner, Kurt Russell, were so moved by the film that they held each other and wept during key moments. "It was like one of those moments where we thought, ‘What have we just seen?’" she reflected.
In closing, Hawn shared a piece of wisdom from her late mother, stating, “Honey? No one will ever forget you.” Hudson responded emotionally, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to share the moment with her mother.
Talking to reporters at the event, the duo referred to Song Sung Blue as a “family celebration,” highlighting Hudson’s performance as a point of pride. Hawn remarked, “We’re so deeply, deeply proud… I’m in awe of Kate, and I think we all are."
