Karen Bass: A Timeline of Actions Taken by LA’s Mayor After the Wildfires
Text Messages from LA Mayor Karen Bass Reveal Controversy During Palisades Fire Response
LOS ANGELES – Recently released text messages from Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass provide insight into her communications during the early days of the Palisades Fire, igniting discussions about her leadership amid one of California’s most destructive wildfire events. These messages surfaced weeks after Bass’s office stated they had been deleted.
In January 2025, as the wildfires spread rapidly across Los Angeles County, Mayor Bass was overseas attending the inauguration of President John Dramani Mahama in Ghana. Although she returned to Los Angeles promptly upon learning of the damage, many Angelenos expressed dissatisfaction with her absence during the initial crisis.
Despite the chaos, Bass’s administration has received a mix of commendation for its disaster recovery efforts and criticism regarding the city’s apparent delays in addressing residents’ needs. One contentious issue included the appointment of Jaime Moore as the new fire chief, following the high-profile firing of former LA Fire Chief Kristin Crowley amid disputes over budget cuts and emergency preparedness.
"The impact of these fires and winds are devastating," Bass stated as she returned to Los Angeles on January 8, 2025, after which she communicated with President Donald J. Trump about strategies for recovery.
Throughout the crisis, Bass faced multiple challenges, including accusations of inadequate budget funding for the Los Angeles Fire Department. Her responses during press conferences highlighted her belief that funding cuts would not significantly affect fire response capabilities, asserting, "There were no reductions that were made that would have impacted the situation."
In the aftermath of the fires, Bass took decisive actions, issuing an executive order to expedite the rebuilding process and appointing Steve Soboroff to lead recovery efforts in affected areas by January 17, 2025. However, her administration has also contended with frustrations from displaced residents concerning insurance denials and inflexible rebuilding timelines.
The release of Bass’s text messages has intensified scrutiny on her administration’s response, showcasing the complexities and challenges that arose after the January wildfires, marked by significant losses and ongoing recovery efforts.
As the anniversary of the fires approaches, Bass has expressed a commitment to support the affected communities, emphasizing the need for innovative solutions to prepare for future climate challenges and enhance the resilience of Los Angeles. "I remain committed to using the full-force of my mayoral power to restore the Palisades community," she affirmed.
