Kam Patterson from Saturday Night Live Shares His Take on the Show’s Vibe and His Own Viewing Experience
Kam Patterson Critiques ‘Saturday Night Live’ in New Stand-Up Special
Kam Patterson, a recent addition to the venerable NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, has sparked conversation with remarks made during his new stand-up special. The special is featured in Netflix’s Kill Tony: Once Upon a Time in Texas, which is now available for streaming.
During his performance, Patterson expressed his thoughts on SNL, describing the show as “really gay.” He candidly admitted, “I’ve never seen it,” while sharing his experience at the showcase for controversial comedians organized by Netflix Is a Joke.
“I’m gonna be honest, I’m gonna keep it 100-percent with y’all. In the nicest way possible, it’s gay. It’s really gay, dog. It’s gay as f*ck,” he declared, illustrating his remarks with animated hand gestures. “Understand something, I was on national television doing this. I’ve shot at somebody before. You understand me? You understand how crazy that change is in life?”
Patterson, who is also a regular on Tony Hinchcliffe’s Kill Tony podcast, performed alongside notable comedians such as Roseanne Barr, Rob Schneider, and Gabriel Iglesias during the special.
Reflecting on his sudden rise to fame, he shared, “You know what’s crazy? I think people are more excited for me than I am for myself though. People keep saying, ‘congratulations,’ ‘good job,’ and ‘that’s dope.’ But understand something, bro. I’m 26, and I’m Black. I’ve never seen the show! I have no idea what the f*ck I signed up for, dog. I’m kind of just there.”
Patterson went on to critique the show’s guest lineup, saying, “And, listen, this sht is not for me, it’s for white people, really! They have on celebrities I’ve never heard of in my life! We had on Glen Powell at one point, and I was like, ‘Who is that?’ And they was like, ‘He was in Top Gun,‘ and I was like, ‘Never seen it!’ And then we had on Miles Teller, and I was like, ‘Who is that?’ And they was like, ‘He was in Top Gun,*‘ and I was like, ‘I’m on to you n****s, man!’”
Patterson joined Saturday Night Live for its 51st season, alongside new cast members Veronika Slowikowska, Tommy Brennan, Jeremy Culhane, and Ben Marshall.
