Angelina Jolie Begins Production on New Thriller ‘Sunny’
Academy Award-winning actress Angelina Jolie has officially commenced production on her latest film, Sunny, a dark thriller directed by Eva Sørhaug, known for your work on Tokyo Vice and Yellowjackets. The project is a collaboration between Gramercy Park Media, A Higher Standard, and Nickel City Pictures.
Set against the backdrop of classic mafia films, Sunny tells the story of a female gangster determined to safeguard her sons and herself from the clutches of an abusive drug kingpin. In the wake of a devastating incident, she faces a race against time to orchestrate their permanent escape.
The screenplay was penned by William Day Frank, who developed the story in collaboration with Sørhaug. Producing alongside Jolie are Nathan Klingher from Gramercy Park Media, Mark Fasano of Nickel City Pictures, and Jeffrey Greenstein from A Higher Standard, with the latter also handling worldwide sales.
Fasano praised Jolie’s performance, describing her as “a tour-de-force.” He stated, “People are going to be shocked by what she brings with this riveting character. This violent world that Eva and Angelina have crafted is grounded in survival and family led by a mother doing anything and everything within her power to protect her two boys.”
Nathan Klingher echoed this sentiment, remarking, “Angelina has made this role uniquely her own. Strong, character-driven thrillers like this are rare, and the attention to detail that she and Eva have brought to the film is impressive to watch.”
Jolie has recently drawn acclaim for her portrayal of opera singer Maria Callas in the film Maria, earning Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award nominations. In addition to Sunny, she is involved in upcoming projects including Couture, a fashion drama premiering at TIFF, the comedy Anxious People, and The Initiative, a spy thriller that reunites her with director Doug Liman.
Sørhaug, a talented Norwegian filmmaker, previously showcased her work in the psychological thriller 90 Minutes, which premiered at the 2017 Toronto Film Festival. She has also directed multiple episodes of Talamasca: The Secret Order for AMC, as well as seasons of Tokyo Vice and Yellowjackets.
