Kaleena Smith Leads Ontario Christian to Victory Over Archbishop Mitty with 50-Point Performance in Double Overtime
In a thrilling showcase at Mater Dei on Saturday, Kaleena Smith delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 50 points to lead Ontario Christian to a 96-87 victory over San Jose Archbishop Mitty in double overtime. This high-stakes matchup featured the top two teams in California and was part of the Kay Yow Showcase.
Despite facing a 12-point deficit with just four minutes remaining in regulation, the No. 1-ranked Knights (20-0) mounted a remarkable comeback. Smith, who was fouled with 4.7 seconds left on the clock, confidently sank both free throws to tie the game at 78-78. Archbishop Mitty’s attempt at a three-pointer at the buzzer fell short, sending the game into overtime.
“I’m pretty confident I’ll make them [free throws] in that situation,” Smith reflected after the game. “This is what I do. I was in a similar spot in the Southern Section finals last year and made them.”
In addition to Smith’s 50 points, junior Tatiana Griffin contributed 20 points and 18 rebounds, while Dani Robinson added 16 points for the Knights. Smith also recorded three assists and four steals, hitting nine of ten free throws. Her career high remains 63 points, achieved during her freshman year.
On the opposing side, No. 2-ranked Archbishop Mitty (12-2), coming off a loss to Etiwanda in last year’s Open Division state finals, saw significant contributions from McKenna Woliczko and Ze’Ni Patterson, who scored 25 and 21 points, respectively.
With both teams considered strong contenders for the March state championship, the possibility of another matchup looms on the horizon.
Knights coach Aundre Cummings emphasized the mounting pressure on his team. “During a timeout in the fourth quarter, I reminded them why they’re here. The girls love being No. 1 in the country and the attention that brings, but with that comes the pressure to prove yourselves,” he said.
