Kacey Musgraves Teams Up with Young Mariachi Brothers Detained by ICE for Special Album Release Performances
Kacey Musgraves is set to collaborate with Texas musicians for a series of album release shows, as she revealed on Tuesday, April 28. The country star will perform alongside The Mariachi Brothers, a trio who gained national attention earlier this year after being detained by ICE.
The performances are scheduled for May 3, 4, and 5 at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas, just two days following the anticipated debut of Musgraves’ new album, Middle of Nowhere. The Grammy-winning artist announced the event by sharing a promotional poster on Instagram featuring the tagline, “Kacey Musgraves … with special guests The Mariachi Brothers.”
The poster also lists the names of Antonio, Caleb, and Joshua Gámez-Cuéllar, residents of McAllen, Texas. Earlier this year, the family was arrested by ICE and held for about two weeks before their release in March, amid increasing scrutiny of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, which have involved mass deportations and widespread protests.
At just 18, Antonio is an award-winning mariachi trumpeter. He and his younger brothers, 14-year-old Caleb and 12-year-old Joshua, performed on Capitol Hill last year at the invitation of Rep. Monica De La Cruz, a Republican congresswoman known for her support of the former president’s immigration policies. Following their arrest, De La Cruz advocated for their release, labeling them as “valued members of the community.”
Musgraves has a history of speaking against ICE and government policies impacting immigrant communities. In June 2025, she expressed her views on X, stating, “If protesters can’t wear masks ICE shouldn’t be able to either.”
Set to arrive on May 1, Middle of Nowhere will be Musgraves’ sixth studio album, following her 2024 release, Deeper Well, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The upcoming album includes collaborations with Miranda Lambert and Willie Nelson. Thus far, fans have been introduced to two tracks: the lead single “Dry Spell” and the title track.
