Jonathan Majors to Attend ‘Dinner at Nick’s’ During Cannes Festival
Jonathan Majors to Star in Political Thriller Dinner at Nick’s
Jonathan Majors is confirmed to lead in Mark Brown’s upcoming political thriller, Dinner at Nick’s. Brown, known for his work on the Barbershop film franchise, will both write and direct the film.
Set against the backdrop of the contentious aftermath of the 2024 presidential election, the story unfolds during a single dinner. Seven friends, divided between Black Democrats and Black Republicans, come together to engage in discussions about American politics. Initially intended as a friendly gathering, the dinner escalates into intense debates, revealing deep-seated tensions surrounding race, gender, and political beliefs. As the night progresses, the group grapples with the pressing question of whether they can still find common ground amidst increasing political violence.
“I’m truly excited to be working with an actor as gifted as Jonathan. The scope, depth, and raw intensity he brings to every performance will no doubt leave audiences completely captivated as he has left me, several times during rehearsal,” Brown stated.
Brown explained that the concept for Dinner at Nick’s stemmed from personal conversations following the 2024 elections. "Those conversations proved that politics is more than skin deep and African Americans differ in politics as they differ in shades of brown,” he said.
The film is set to be produced by Jonah Hirsch, AJ Munoz, and Manny Hailey, with filming scheduled to commence in early summer. Hirsch emphasized the importance of Brown’s storytelling, noting, “Mark Brown has a unique voice that challenges and pushes the conversation on politics and race. He has written a very honest and daring script. This is a very timely film that needs to be told, especially now, in the new reality we find ourselves in.”
Throughout the development process, Brown often referenced a quote by Amiri Baraka: “The artist’s role is to raise the consciousness of the people, to make them understand life, the world, and themselves more completely.”
Dinner at Nick’s follows Majors’ involvement in another project directed by Kyle Rankin, as well as his roles in recent hits including Creed III, the critically acclaimed Magazine Dreams, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. However, Majors faced challenges in 2023 when he was charged with assaulting his former girlfriend, later found guilty. Despite a federal lawsuit being dropped against him that accused him of assault and defamation, he has been making strides to rebuild his career.
Majors is represented by WME.
