Jonas Brothers Share Insight on Their Dad’s Job Loss as a Pastor Due to Their Broader Musical Journey
Jonas Brothers Reflect on Two Decades in Music as They Release New Album
As the Jonas Brothers celebrate 20 years in the music industry, the trio reflects on their journey and the challenges they faced on their path to success.
In 2006, Nick, Joe, and Kevin Jonas released their debut album, It’s About Time. However, its lackluster performance led to their dismissal from their initial record label. The financial backing from their parents added pressure, as the family had invested heavily in the brothers’ careers.
“I definitely felt a lot of pressure,” 33-year-old Nick Jonas shared during a recent cover shoot for PEOPLE. He recounted the significant changes in their lives, mentioning that their father lost his job after the family pivoted from making solely Christian music to exploring themes of love and heartbreak.
Their parents, Kevin Jonas Sr. and Denise Jonas, shifted their focus toward supporting their sons’ musical aspirations, while the brothers remained resolute in their commitment to succeed. “Financially we were in a really vulnerable position and we’d spent all this money that we kind of didn’t have," Nick stated. "We either had to succeed or we had to shift and figure our stuff out.”
In search of a new record label, the Jonas family relocated from New Jersey to Los Angeles. Shortly thereafter, the brothers signed with Hollywood Records and released their breakthrough album, Jonas Brothers, in 2007. The album featured hit singles like "S.O.S." and "When You Look Me in the Eyes," marking the beginning of a series of platinum albums and sold-out world tours. The difficulties they faced early on greatly influenced their songwriting.
“The fact that these songs were written in those desperate moments and then we kind of found our voice, I think, was really special,” Kevin noted. Nick added that the emotional weight of their lyrics reflected their earlier struggles.
Fast-forward to 2025, and the Jonas Brothers are busier than ever. Their latest album, Greetings From Your Hometown, was released in August, and they are currently on another extensive tour across the country. Reflecting on their past, Joe offered advice to their younger selves: “Relax a little bit… Just stop, slow down and enjoy it.”
He emphasized that, at 36, the lessons learned over the years are invaluable, reminding them to appreciate the ongoing journey of personal growth.
The brothers continue to thrive in the industry, showcasing resilience and adaptation in an ever-evolving landscape of popular music.
