Jon Stewart Highlights MAGA Reactions to Bad Bunny’s Halftime Show: A Call for Their Own Safe Space
Jon Stewart Takes Aim at MAGA Reaction to Super Bowl Halftime Show
In a pointed segment on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart addressed the backlash from MAGA supporters regarding Bad Bunny’s halftime performance during the Super Bowl, labeling their response as “pathetic.”
Stewart opened the segment by commenting on the game itself, humorously noting, “Man, if you like high-scoring contests where the outcome is in doubt till the final suspenseful climactic seconds, this was not the game for you. Slow. Grinding. It nearly took all the fun out of watching the Patriots lose.”
He then pivoted to the halftime show, where he praised Bad Bunny, stating, “Mr. Bunny killed it.” Stewart remarked on the joyous nature of the performance, albeit adding a critique: “I forgot, for a significant portion of Americans, everything that happens must uniformly be filtered through a particular MAGA-centric worldview and judged on how well it conforms to that traditional vision, which doesn’t include knowing where the biblioteca is.”
Known for his incisive humor, Stewart sarcastically asked, “Is it too much to ask for a halftime show that this great nation can enjoy in its mother tongue?” He referenced a separate event hosted by Turning Point USA that attempted to showcase an alternative, all-American halftime show in English.
The segment took a chaotic turn as it displayed a clip of Kid Rock’s poorly received performance, which included nonsensical lyrics. Stewart reacted with mock appreciation: “Thank you! Merriam and Webster couldn’t have put it better themselves, regarding the up jumping of said boogie insofar as the diggy diggy diggy being a da-bang da-bang.”
Stewart then challenged the notion that entertainers should be responsible for national unity, questioning, “Why the fuck is it the Super Bowl halftime entertainer’s job to unify the country? Isn’t there another person whose job description is much more along those lines?”
The former Daily Show host also commented on the controversy surrounding President Donald Trump’s posting of a racist video depicting the Obamas. Citing Sean Spicer’s defense of the video, Stewart quipped, “If you say the N-word at the end of the sentence, it still ruins the whole sentence.” He illustrated this with a graphic analogy, emphasizing, “There are certain things in this world where placement is less important than presence.”
The audience resonated with Stewart’s commentary, responding with loud cheers throughout the show. Near the conclusion, Stewart delivered a powerful message about MAGA’s perceived fragility, stating, “These people, who control every branch of government, are so triggered by someone singing in Spanish for 20 minutes, they need to create their own safe space alternative halftime show.” He further declared it “actually fucking pathetic, the gap between the power you all wield…and the victimhood you all claim is the real offense.”
In a humorous wrap-up, Stewart suggested that the appropriate snack for a “weak and pathetic pity party” would be yogurt, referencing an earlier segment that lampooned RFK’s dietary preferences.
