John Mellencamp Teams Up with Sean Penn for a Special Greatest Hits Tour and a ‘Jack & Diane’ Sing-Along Session
John Mellencamp Announces Greatest Hits Tour
John Mellencamp, the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, is gearing up for a greatest hits tour this summer. The announcement, made in a vibrant video featuring actor Sean Penn, reveals that the tour will kick off on July 10, 2026, and consist of 19 shows across major U.S. cities.
Reflecting on career longevity, Mellencamp recalls a pivotal moment nearly 20 years ago when folk legend Pete Seeger advised him to “keep it small, but keep it going.” Since then, Mellencamp has performed primarily in intimate theaters, opting for personal connections over vast crowds. However, as he approaches his 75th birthday, he is ready to bring his music back to larger audiences.
In the video, Mellencamp states, “They’ve been asking me to do this for years. ‘Come play outside again.’ And I’m saying, ‘No, no, no.’ But this time, I thought I might be getting to the age where I might want to try to share these songs with people again.” Sean Penn underscores this sentiment, suggesting there’s no reason to hold onto the music.
The debut of the Dancing Words Tour promises a mix of Mellencamp’s biggest hits such as “Hurts So Good” and “Pink Houses,” alongside older favorites like “I Need a Lover” and “Ain’t Even Done with the Night,” which fans have not heard live in decades.
“It’s a bit surprising to think that at 74, I would still be here,” Mellencamp admits. “But I don’t think it’s a good idea to sit on the couch. If you want to die, sit on the couch.”
Fans can anticipate performances in cities like New York and Los Angeles, spanning a variety of notable venues. The singer elaborated on his plans to modernize classics, stating, “I’m going to do ‘Jack & Diane’ as what they call a smash-up, which will be a soul song. People are going to go, ‘What the f—?’”
The artist’s decision to limit the tour to 19 dates stems from his desire to avoid the fatigue of extensive touring. “I like the first 20 shows. Then after that, it turns into work,” he remarked.
Mellencamp will be joined on tour by his son Hud and girlfriend Kristin Kehrberg, whom he describes as a wonderful partner. He also expressed happiness regarding his relationships with his daughters, noting his satisfaction with family life.
As the tour approaches, Mellencamp stays motivated by the ongoing activity of his contemporaries. “If Willie Nelson can do it, if Bob Dylan can do it, if Bruce [Springsteen] can do it, I can do it,” he stated.
