Joe Russo Shares Thoughts on the Growing Issue of Spoilers Online: Why Control Isn’t Possible
With anticipation building for Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, director Joe Russo addresses the conversation surrounding spoilers, emphasizing that they are not detrimental to the overall experience for fans.
The film, directed by Russo along with his brother Anthony, is set to debut in theaters on December 18. Russo acknowledged the challenges posed by the current social media environment, where fans often seek to avoid spoilers but find themselves navigating a complicated landscape. He stated, “On one hand, audiences want to be surprised, and that’s part of what makes the theatrical experience exciting. On the other hand, it can become a little over-policed, where people are anxious about engaging with anything,” in an interview with Metro.
Russo further explained, “We design these films to unfold in a certain way, and we want audiences to feel those moments as intended. But at the same time, you can’t control everything. You have to focus on making something that holds up beyond the initial surprise.”

Last year, Russo shed light on the film’s production efforts to prevent spoilers. “We’re pretty good about shutting that down. We’ve sort of strategized to hopefully be effective with that,” he told Collider.
He shared that much of the movie would be filmed on soundstages to limit unauthorized photographs. “We don’t want people getting photographs, so we are being pretty stringent. The location work we are doing, we have picked those locations with that in mind, as well,” he added.
The cast of Avengers: Doomsday features a star-studded lineup, including Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, and Paul Rudd as Ant-Man. Other notable actors include Tenoch Huerta, Simu Liu, Letitia Wright, Kelsey Grammer, and more.
Additionally, fans can expect appearances from Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom and Chris Evans in an undisclosed role.
