Joe Alwyn Faces Wardrobe Issue at 2026 Golden Globes, Receives Support from ‘Hamnet’ Co-Stars
Joe Alwyn Faces Wardrobe Malfunction at the 2026 Golden Globes
Actor Joe Alwyn experienced a wardrobe mishap while attending the 2026 Golden Globes, held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on January 11. The 34-year-old, who is known for his role in the film Hamnet, was posing for photos with his co-stars Paul Mescal, Jessie Buckley, Noah Jupe, and Jacobi Jupe when a button on his shirt broke, exposing his bare chest.
“Sh*t,” Alwyn exclaimed, prompting laughter from Buckley, who quipped, “Let’s get the party started!” His fellow co-star Noah Jupe quickly jumped in to offer a solution by standing in front of Alwyn to shield him from view, while Alwyn hugged him from behind as the photoshoot continued.
The incident occurred just after Hamnet won the prestigious award for Best Picture – Drama, with Buckley also receiving the Best Actress award for her performance. The film garnered additional nominations for Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score.
During the acceptance speech, director Chloé Zhao reflected on a conversation with Mescal, stating, “Making Hamnet made him realize that the most important thing of being an artist is learning to be vulnerable enough to allow ourselves to be seen for who we are and not who we ought to be.” She emphasized the importance of embracing all aspects of oneself.
Buckley, during her own acceptance speech, praised the film’s diverse cast, saying, “This is not a normal feeling or situation to be in but thank you Golden Globes… It was such an extraordinary set to be part of because we were telling the story of probably the most famous Brit that ever lived.”
Hamnet is based on Maggie O’Farrell’s novel of the same name, exploring the emotional depth surrounding the death of William Shakespeare’s son, Hamnet. Alwyn, who portrays Bartholomew Hathaway, described the film as “painful and sad and heartbreaking, but full of love,” highlighting its themes of art and healing.
Meanwhile, Alwyn became a topic of online discussion throughout the night as several songs by his former partner, Taylor Swift, played during the event. Social media users noted the irony, with one commenting, “Joe Alwyn having to hear The Fate of Ophelia 💀,” and another adding, “Nikki is terrorizing him with these songs 💀,” referring to host Nikki Glaser’s Swift-themed entrance.
Overall, the 2026 Golden Globes showcased significant achievements for Hamnet, marked by memorable moments and recognition for its talented cast and crew.
