João Klauss Scores in Galaxy’s Season Opener, but Match Ends in a Draw
Nicolás Fernández’s Penalty Secures Draw for NYCFC Against Galaxy in Season Opener
In an exciting season opener, Nicolás Fernández netted a penalty kick in the second half, allowing New York City FC to earn a 1-1 draw against the LA Galaxy. The match took place on Sunday in front of a sellout crowd of 30,510 at Dignity Health Sports Park.
Newly signed João Klauss made an immediate impact, scoring just 90 seconds into the match. With assists from Marco Reus and Joseph Paintsil, Klauss put the Galaxy in the lead early on. The club acquired him through a cash-for-player trade with St. Louis City, hoping to fill the gap left by Riqui Puig, who is sidelined for a second consecutive season due to complications following a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Los Angeles maintained their 1-0 advantage until the 66th minute when Emiro Garces received a second yellow card, resulting in his ejection. This opened the door for Fernández to convert a successful penalty, leveling the score. Last season, Fernández scored five goals in 19 appearances for LA.
In his 25th career start for the Galaxy, Novak Micovic did not make any saves; 20 of his appearances came in the previous season, during which he allowed 37 goals. On the other side, Matt Freese, the reigning goalkeeper of the year, recorded six saves for New York, four of which came in the first half. Freese had eight clean sheets in 31 starts last season while earning the accolade.
New York City FC entered the match following a loss to eventual MLS Cup champions Inter Miami in the Eastern Conference Final last season. Meanwhile, the Galaxy are seeking to bounce back from a challenging previous season that included a league-record 16-match winless streak, just one year after clinching the MLS Cup against the New York Red Bulls.
