In a recent roundtable discussion featured in the Los Angeles Times, Jennifer Lopez reflected on her evolving relationship with fame and the challenges it brings. The actress was joined by notable peers, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Emily Blunt, Tessa Thompson, Elle Fanning, and Sydney Sweeney.
The conversation took place during the 2025 Oscar Actresses Roundtable, published on December 16. When the group explored how they manage negative media attention while remaining focused on their craft, Sydney Sweeney described such negativity as “just outside noise.” She emphasized that the world fades away once they are on set, where authentic moments and relationships are forged.
Paltrow turned to Lopez and expressed her desire to hear her thoughts on the matter. Lopez shared, “From the very beginning, for whatever reason, I’ve been a lightning rod for nice things and a lot of negativity. And it’s hard because you say to yourself, ‘These people don’t get me. They don’t see me. They don’t understand me.’ Then all of a sudden they do. And then they don’t again.”

Lopez expressed gratitude for the foundation her upbringing provided, stating, “Even from when I was very young, I would always say, ‘I know who I am. I’m a good person. I know what I’m doing. People wouldn’t hire me if I wasn’t good at what I do.’ I was always affirming myself and keeping my feet on the ground.” She credited her parents with instilling a strong sense of self.
Continuing her reflection, she mentioned the importance of self-care: “I’d have to block out the noise so I can put my head on the pillow at night and go, ‘I did good today. I was a good person. I was kind to people. I worked really hard. I’m a good mom.'” Lopez is a mother to 17-year-old twins, Max and Emme.

Tessa Thompson, 42, added to the discussion, noting the importance of separating one’s public identity from their private self. “Not having your sense of self or identity entangled in this other self that belongs to the public seems like such a healthy thing,” she remarked, indicating her ongoing quest for balance.
In a previous appearance on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show, Lopez discussed the compromises that come with fame. “The truth is when you’re in this type of career and you have the type of level of fame that we’re talking about, there is a compromise,” she explained. “There are adjustments that you do need to make, because it is a very blessed life.”
Lopez also acknowledged the tradeoffs associated with her career: “I love what I do and I appreciate my fans and I appreciate the position that I have and the opportunities I continue to get. But at the end of the day, there is a tradeoff in certain ways. And that’s one of the tradeoffs, is that you have to learn how to navigate your personal life, and my personal life has suffered at times because of that.”
She concluded with a realization that personal growth is vital for sustaining relationships: “I’ve realized that you have to change your behavior if you want to have a successful relationship in your life, and that was part of it.”
