Jennifer Lawrence Reflects on Missing the Role of Sharon Tate Due to Critics’ Comments on Her Looks
Jennifer Lawrence Reflects on Missed Role in ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’
In a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Jennifer Lawrence opened up about the possibility of portraying Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino’s acclaimed film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The role ultimately went to Margot Robbie, fifty years after Tate’s tragic death.
Lawrence revealed that Tarantino had expressed interest in her for the 2019 film. However, she suspects that negative online reactions influenced his decision. “He did want me to star in the film, but I think the internet got to him,” she explained during the podcast. “And then everybody was like, ‘She’s not pretty enough to play Sharon Tate.’ And then they didn’t.”
Reflecting on the situation, Lawrence stated, “I’m pretty sure it is true. Or it’s that thing where I’ve been telling the story this way for so long that I believe it. No, but I’m pretty sure that happened. Or he just was never considering me for the part, and the internet just like went out of their way to call me ugly.”
Host Josh Horowitz expressed disbelief at the harshness of online critics, prompting Lawrence to respond with sarcasm, saying, “No, those sweetie pies?”
In a related note, Lawrence indicated that she had previously been offered a different role in Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight (2015), which ultimately went to Jennifer Jason Leigh. “I turned it down. I should not have done [that],” she admitted.
