Jason Heyward Begins New Journey with the Dodgers as a Special Assistant
Jason Heyward Takes on New Role with Dodgers Front Office
Recently retired five-time Gold Glove outfielder Jason Heyward has joined the Los Angeles Dodgers’ front office as a special assistant. Although his official start date was at the beginning of the month, Wednesday marked his first day at Dodger Stadium.
“I asked for an opportunity,” Heyward stated. “I asked for an opportunity to learn. I have a goal of potentially one day being in the front office. But I understand there’s a lot I have to learn on this side of things.” He emphasized the importance of acquiring skills in scouting, player evaluation, research and development, and analytics.
Having played for the Dodgers in 2023 and part of 2024, Heyward began reaching out to various teams during spring training about his career transition. Upon announcing his retirement in March after a 16-year major-league career, he made it clear that stepping away from the game entirely was not his intention. This new position allows him to explore various departments within the organization before selecting a specific focus.
Heyward also expressed confidence in his ability to naturally develop his player evaluation skills. “What I appreciate is, they don’t want to just say, ‘Alright J, come on in here, and you have to go do this, you have to enjoy it and be good at it,’ without me having a chance to really see what it is I want to do,” he remarked. “So right now, everything’s on the table, but it is a process, starting from the ground up.”
As he embarks on this new chapter, Heyward aims to leverage his previous experience to inform his growth in the front office setting.
