Jane Fonda Celebrates Robert Redford at the TCM Classic Film Festival Screening of ‘Barefoot in the Park’
Jane Fonda to Honor Robert Redford at TCM Classic Film Festival
Jane Fonda will pay tribute to her friend and frequent co-star Robert Redford by introducing the screening of Barefoot in the Park during the special Opening Night Gala of the 17th Annual TCM Classic Film Festival next month.
The 1967 film, directed by Gene Saks, will be showcased on Thursday, April 30, as the festival launches, running through May 3 at various venues in Hollywood.
“Opening Night sets the tone for the entire Festival,” remarked Ben Mankiewicz, TCM host and official master of ceremonies for the TCM Classic Film Festival. “Having Jane Fonda with us to honor her friend and co-star Robert Redford makes this year especially meaningful. Barefoot in the Park represents a pivotal moment in Hollywood history, and it’s a fitting way to begin our celebration.”
This year’s festival theme, “The World Comes to Hollywood,” reflects the ongoing global creativity that has shaped the film industry. “It highlights the ambition that built the film capital of the world and continues to influence it today,” Mankiewicz added.
In addition to Barefoot in the Park, Fonda and Redford have collaborated on other notable films, including The Chase, The Electric Horseman, and Our Souls at Night.
This year’s festival will also honor the late TCM host Robert Osborne by presenting the Robert Osborne Award, which acknowledges individuals who have preserved the cultural heritage of classic film. The award will be given to Bruce Goldstein, the Founding Repertory Artistic Director of New York’s Film Forum and the founder of Rialto Pictures.
Actor Barbara Hershey will appear for screenings of Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) and A World Apart (1988). Additionally, Paul Williams will be celebrated with screenings of The Muppet Movie (1979), featuring his Oscar-nominated song “Rainbow Connection,” and the 1987 comedy Ishtar. Williams is expected to attend the screenings.
Previous announcements concerning the festival include a series of classic films such as Alice in Wonderland (75th anniversary world premiere restoration), The Best Years of Our Lives, The Day the Earth Stood Still (75th anniversary presentation), and Days of Heaven, among others.
Further programming details, special guests, and events will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
In another notable appearance, Fonda will star in the New York stage premiere of Dear Everything: A Musical Uprising for the Earth, created by V (formerly Eve Ensler) and directed by Diane Paulus. The event, taking place on Earth Day, April 22, at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn, will feature a cast including Crystal Monee Hall, YDE, and others.
V emphasized the urgency of the musical, citing the current environmental crises, stating, “Dear Everything offers an antidote — the voices of visionary youth, powerful storytelling, and inspirational music.”
