Jamie-Lynn Sigler Takes on a Doctor Role with MS in Grey’s Anatomy
Jamie-Lynn Sigler Joins Grey’s Anatomy as Guest Star
Jamie-Lynn Sigler, known for her role in Big Sky, is set to make a significant return to ABC with a guest-starring role in the acclaimed medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. She will appear in the January 15 episode, titled “Heavy on Me,” portraying Dr. Laura Kaplan, a urologist who lives with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Dr. Kaplan visits Grey Sloan Hospital at the invitation of Catherine Fox, played by Debbie Allen, and provides Richard Webber, depicted by James Pickens Jr., with a fresh perspective on his medical case.
The character was specifically tailored for Sigler, who has been managing her MS diagnosis for over two decades. This role marks her return to television following a three-year hiatus. Both Sigler and the show’s producers emphasized the importance of portraying a character who, despite living with a health condition, embodies a fulfilling professional and personal life.
Diagnosed with MS at the age of 20, Sigler concealed her condition for 15 years, largely due to concerns about its impact on her Hollywood career. Since revealing her diagnosis in 2016, she has become an advocate for open discussions about MS and the stigma surrounding it. She addresses these issues on her podcast, MeSsy, co-hosted with fellow actress Christina Applegate, who also has MS.
“MS gave me my superpower, which is vulnerability,” Sigler stated in a recent interview with People.
The inclusion of authentic narratives surrounding actors’ medical conditions has become more prevalent in television. For example, Eric Dane recently portrayed a patient with ALS in NBC’s Brilliant Minds, while Michael J. Fox is depicting a character with Parkinson’s disease on Apple TV’s Shrinking.
Best recognized for her role as Meadow Soprano in HBO’s The Sopranos, Sigler was last seen in ABC’s Big Sky. She is also featured in the upcoming indie thriller The Man Across The Street, alongside Teri Polo and Dylan Walsh. Additionally, Sigler co-hosts the podcast Not Today Pal with her former Sopranos co-star Robert Iler, and her memoir, And So It Is… A Memoir of Acceptance and Hope, will be published by HarperCollins on May 5. Sigler is represented by Paradigm and Vault Entertainment.
