Catcher Jacob Madrid Shines on Senior Day for Sherman Oaks Notre Dame
On the final day of the regular season, Jacob Madrid, a senior catcher for Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, delivered a remarkable performance, hitting three home runs in a 7-1 victory over Loyola. With this win, the Knights secured third place in the Mission League.
Madrid’s impressive display brought his season total to 11 home runs. He hit a solo home run in the second inning to right field, followed by a three-run homer in the third, also to right field, and capped off his game with another solo shot in the sixth inning to left field.
“It was surprising because I was honestly trying for line drives the opposite way,” Madrid commented on his unexpected success at the plate.
As an Oregon commit, Madrid expressed confidence in his team’s readiness for the upcoming Southern Section Division 1 playoffs, with pairings set to be announced Saturday at 1 p.m.
In other Mission League action, Orange Lutheran edged out Mater Dei 6-5, winning on a walk-off RBI double by Eric Zdunek in the bottom of the ninth inning. Mater Dei had held a 5-4 lead in the eighth, but a critical fly ball from Ricardo Hurtado led to a tying run. CJ Weinstein contributed with a home run for the Lancers.
Harvard-Westlake secured a decisive 10-0 victory against Crespi, clinching at least a share of the Mission League title, bolstered by strong performances from Ethan Price and Louis Lappe, each with three hits.
Sierra Canyon triumphed over Bishop Alemany 6-5, thanks to home runs from Cody Gallegos and Mikhail Johnson. This victory allowed Sierra Canyon to finish in second place in the Mission League, while Alemany ended in fourth.
In a tightly contested matchup, Chaminade narrowly defeated St. Francis 1-0, achieving their second shutout victory of the week. Jackson Schroeder and Bronson Jackson combined for the win, with Jackson driving in the only run.
El Camino Real won against Granada Hills 1-0, powered by Jackson Sellz, who threw a three-hit shutout. Ryan Glassman’s RBI single in the sixth inning secured the victory, crucial for maintaining playoff positioning.
In the Baseline League, Etiwanda continued to ascend the Division 1 rankings with a 3-1 win over Upland. Michael Aleman excelled on the mound, striking out nine batters and benefiting from a two-run home run by Luke Severns.
The Servite Friars also enjoyed success, shutting out Cypress 1-0 behind a combined effort from three pitchers. Mikey Cabral accounted for the game’s only run with two hits.
In the Southern Section with playoff implications, Covina delivered a dominant performance against Hacienda Heights Wilson, winning 10-0 with Donovan Johnson throwing a no-hitter and recording 11 strikeouts.
Meanwhile, in softball, Murrieta Mesa triumphed over Chaparral 13-0, with Lilly Hauser striking out ten batters and contributing a home run. Orange Lutheran clinched the Trinity League title with a 3-0 victory over Santa Margarita, led by a complete game from Rylee Silva. Mater Dei secured a 9-5 victory against JSerra, with Savanah Duncan hitting a grand slam.
