Insights on Teddy and Owen’s Heartfelt Farewell: What to Know About Kevin McKidd & Kim Raver’s Departure and Network Budget Challenges
SPOILER ALERT: Details on Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Finale
In an unexpected turn for its Season 22 finale, Grey’s Anatomy chose not to conclude with a dramatic cliffhanger. Instead, the episode paid tribute to departing cast members Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver, spotlighting their characters, Owen and Teddy, through a montage celebrating their journey throughout the series.
The finale began with a significant event: the collapse of a major Seattle bridge. Teddy, portrayed by Raver, reacted in panic after receiving a voicemail from Owen, who was shown unconscious in his submerged car at the time of the disaster.
In a departure from the show’s typical tragic narrative, Owen executed a heroic escape. He managed to free himself and save a family trapped in their vehicle, offering a fitting close to his character arc and reflecting on his past trauma related to his experiences in war.
The traumatic incident prompted Teddy to revisit her previous declaration of independence, offering a heartfelt twist. Rather than repeating her last season’s catchphrase, “I choose me,” she expressed, “I choose us,” revealing her desire to prioritize their family. “I needed some time to figure out what I wanted for myself and what I want is you and our kids,” she stated, sealing their emotional reconnection.
The episode concluded with the couple deciding to relocate to Paris, where Teddy had been offered a research position. Owen assured her, “You’re my life,” emphasizing his commitment to their family.
The decision for McKidd and Raver to exit the series came amidst rumors of budget cuts ahead of a potential Season 23 renewal. Showrunner Krista Vernoff mentioned the creative rationale behind the departures but acknowledged the financial pressures faced by network series.
“It was a very, very painful episode to write,” said Vernoff. “This was not an easy decision. It was really tough. These two have been through the relationship roller coaster, and I think I was ready for them to have a happy ending.”
The decision to write out both characters occurred shortly after the New Year. While acknowledging the challenges posed by budget cuts across network television, Vernoff stressed that narrative and creative aspects ultimately guided the show’s direction.
Speaking about the show’s trajectory, she stated, “Any major show decision is always determined by story and creative, but we have not escaped what’s happening to all other shows over here.”
Regarding the possibility of future appearances by Owen and Teddy, Vernoff hinted that while it’s often rare for Grey’s Anatomy to revisit former characters, there could be opportunities for guest spots, especially given Teddy’s connection to Paris.
As the finale raised questions about character continuities, Vernoff clarified missed interactions, particularly between Teddy and fellow character Cass, suggesting that their farewell scenes likely took place off-screen due to the pressing circumstances affecting Teddy’s decisions during the chaotic episode.
This emotional finale marks a poignant moment for Grey’s Anatomy as it continues to evolve while balancing character arcs and audience expectations.
