Insights from Noah Hawley on Creating ‘The Witches of Cambridge’ for Hulu, Inspired by Alice Hoffman’s Book
Hulu Develops "The Witches of Cambridge" Drama Series
Hulu is set to adapt "The Witches of Cambridge," a forthcoming novel by Alice Hoffman, renowned author of "Practical Magic." The series will be produced by Noah Hawley’s 26 Keys Productions.
The narrative centers on two exceptional young women navigating the complexities of 1950s Cambridge, Massachusetts, as they delve into a enigmatic secret organization of witches at Radcliffe, known as the Lilith Society.
This new series bears thematic similarities to Hoffman’s 1995 novel "Practical Magic," which also features two witches, famously portrayed by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in the film adaptation.
"The Witches of Cambridge" marks the first installment in a planned series and is scheduled for publication by Scribner on August 11, 2026. This release precedes the anticipated September 11 debut of "Practical Magic 2," a movie sequel based on Hoffman’s 2021 novel "The Book of Magic," in which Bullock and Kidman will reprise their roles. Additionally, a musical adaptation of "Practical Magic" is currently underway.
Hawley, who holds an overall deal with FX and Disney Entertainment Television, is recognized as the creator, writer, and showrunner of FX’s "Alien: Earth," a series inspired by the iconic film franchise. This show has been renewed for a second season, set to commence production in 2026. He also continues his role as executive producer, writer, showrunner, and director of FX’s acclaimed anthology series "Fargo," which has received 70 Primetime Emmy nominations and seven wins across its five seasons.
Furthermore, FX recently granted a series order to Hawley and Rob Mac for an adaptation of Ubisoft’s video game franchise "Far Cry," with Mac attached to star. Both "Alien: Earth" and "Fargo" are produced under Hawley’s Austin-based 26 Keys Productions, which is also behind "Legion."
Hawley is represented by WME, Untitled Entertainment, and McKuin Frankel Whitehead, while Hoffman is represented by CAA.
