Inside ‘9-1-1’: Oliver Stark and Ryan Guzman Talk About the Unique Dynamic of ‘Buddie’ and What Sets It Apart from Rivalries
‘9-1-1’ Showrunner Discusses Fan Reactions to ‘Buddie’ Dynamics
Tim Minear, the showrunner of the popular series 9-1-1, recently addressed the burgeoning interest in a potential romantic relationship between characters Buck and Eddie, portrayed by Oliver Stark and Ryan Guzman. His remarks have stirred anticipation, though some fans may find them disappointing.
In a recent interview, Minear reflected on the fan-generated narratives surrounding the Buck and Eddie dynamic. Viewers closely analyze every piece of dialogue, searching for signs that their on-screen camaraderie might evolve into a genuine romantic relationship, rather than remaining merely a topic of fan fiction.
The recent success of Heated Rivalry, a series that showcases rival hockey players navigating animosity and a secret romance, has fueled speculation about the possibility of "Buddie" becoming a reality. Minear acknowledged this heightened anticipation but emphasized the distinct nature of 9-1-1.
“It is a very difficult subject because I love the Buddie fans, and I am one of them,” he told The Washington Post. “It’s different than Heated Rivalry, where that is the show — the show is about those two guys getting together. That’s not what this show is.”
Minear acknowledged that his perspective might frustrate some fans, saying, “This will probably piss off people, but whatever, this is what I think. I think the possibility of [Buddie] is what’s exciting.”
Oliver Stark, who plays Buck, also weighed in on the potential storyline, expressing that if the show were to explore a romantic arc between the two characters, it should not simply cater to fan wishes. “What I will say is that if the story ever goes in that direction, I don’t think the way to do it is purely to give in to fans,” Stark stated. “I hope, if it goes there, it’s done because that’s the right story to tell and that’s the right progression for the characters.”
He underscored his desire for authenticity in storytelling, emphasizing that he doesn’t want the relationship to be perceived merely as fan service, even though he understands fans would likely be pleased by a "Buddie" relationship. “So I hope it’s not a case of giving in as much as that’s the natural progression for the story,” Stark added.
As discussions around ‘Buddie’ progress, it remains to be seen how the show will balance fan expectations with the authentic development of its characters.
