Indie Studio Previews Exciting Lineup Before Their Debut Film at Sundance
New Film ‘The Musical’ Explores Rivalry and Revenge in Middle School Theater
January 24, 2024
A new film titled The Musical features an impressive cast, including Will Brill, Gillian Jacobs, and Rob Lowe. The story revolves around a bitter playwright-turned-middle-school theater teacher, portrayed by Brill. His life takes a tumultuous turn when his ex-girlfriend, played by Jacobs, begins dating his arch-nemesis, the school principal, depicted by Lowe. In a bid for revenge, the teacher concocts a plan to stage an outrageously inappropriate musical to undermine the principal’s ambitions for academic success.
The film is set to premiere in competition at the Sundance Film Festival and marks the feature debut of Sundance Ignite Fellow Giselle Bonilla.
Sequel Media, the film’s production company, has ambitious plans for the future. Their upcoming slate includes Mother Courage, which will mark the directorial debut of Cody Fern and feature a star-studded cast that includes Sarah Paulson, Naomi Watts, Academy Award winner Dianne Wiest, and Toby Wallace. Additionally, the slate features two documentary films from William Swann and Casey Feldman, the creators behind Netflix’s top-rated docuseries, Trainwreck. Fans can also look forward to an upcoming, yet-to-be-announced project from Bonilla, alongside several more titles currently under wraps.
Tim Gruber, co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Sequel, shared the studio’s innovative vision. "We aim to move beyond traditional Hollywood financing models, tapping into a new class of global retail investors and practices that have been underutilized in the film industry," he said. The company’s efforts are supported by Base, the on-chain ecosystem developed by Coinbase, designed to empower creators. This collaboration marks one of the first substantial attempts to enhance film financing through blockchain technology.
Alex Silberberg, co-founder of Sequel, emphasized the studio’s mission to broaden opportunities for independent filmmakers. “We founded Sequel to give independent filmmakers access to tools and communities they’ve never had before. Our goal is to expand the universe of who can participate in getting great films made and to support emerging filmmakers and original stories that might otherwise go untold,” he stated.
Jesse Pollak, Creator of Base at Coinbase, commented on the partnership’s significance. “Base is built for builders like Sequel; teams that ship in the open and use crypto to solve real problems. Putting film financing on-chain shows how this technology can unlock new creative models and reach entirely new audiences,” Pollak noted.
The arrival of The Musical at Sundance showcases not only its unique narrative but also the evolving landscape of film financing.
