Indiana Dominates Alabama 38-3 for First Rose Bowl Win and a Spot in the CFP Semifinals
Indiana Dominates Alabama in Historic Rose Bowl Victory
In a remarkable display of skill and strategy, the top-seeded Indiana Hoosiers triumphed over Alabama with a commanding 38-3 victory in the 112th Rose Bowl, securing their place in the College Football Playoff semifinals. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza, fresh off winning the school’s first Heisman Trophy, threw for three touchdowns and 192 yards, leading the Hoosiers to their first-ever Rose Bowl win.
The Hoosiers established dominance early, scoring the first 24 points of the game. The fourth quarter saw additional rushing touchdowns from Kaelon Black and Roman Hemby, further solidifying Indiana’s lead in front of a spirited crowd that celebrated the team’s re-emergence in college football.
“This victory is monumental for our program,” Mendoza said. “We’ve worked hard for this moment, and it feels incredible to finally achieve it.”
Indiana (14-0) outperformed Alabama (11-4) not only in scoring but also at the line of scrimmage, outgaining the Crimson Tide 407 yards to 193. The victory came as a relief after Indiana’s bowl game drought since their win at the Copper Bowl in 1991. The performance was viewed as a continuation of the transformative efforts under head coach Curt Cignetti, who has led the team to an impressive 25-2 record over the past two seasons.
The Hoosiers’ momentum is set to carry them into a Peach Bowl matchup against fifth-seeded Oregon on January 9, a team they defeated earlier in the season. The outcome of this upcoming semifinal will determine whether Indiana can advance to compete for their first national championship.
Conversely, Alabama faced challenges throughout the game. With Ty Simpson completing just 67 yards before being replaced by backup Austin Mack, their once-prominent offense struggled against Indiana’s staunch defense. This defeat marks a stark contrast to Alabama’s strong finish to the previous season under former coach Nick Saban.
Cignetti’s approach has instilled a sense of confidence in his team, which appeared unfazed by Alabama’s storied legacy. As the Hoosiers celebrate their triumph, they remain focused on the challenges ahead.
Looking toward the future, Alabama is set to host East Carolina on September 5, while Indiana prepares for a formidable battle against Oregon, aiming to continue their historic journey through the playoffs.
